If the engine is stock, there is no adjustment to the valves. The engine is equipped with hydraulic tappets that take up for any wear or heat expansion of the cylinders. The pushrods are non-adjustable but are of different lengths. They are color-coded as to what position they go in.

Now, if your engine has been modified and adjustable pushrods installed, they should work the same way unless they are way out of adjustment. Then, it depends on "whose" pushrods they are as not all pushrods have the same threaded ends on them. But, all is not lost.

Take one of the pushrods out of the engine and adjust the pushrod as short as it will go. Now, turn the end out until it makes the pushrod exactly 0.100" longer while counting the "flats" on the adjuster. When you install the pushrod, make sure the tappet is at it's lowest point in the bore. Put the pushrod in, don't forget the tube and the new O-rings, and adjust the pushrod out until you have zero backlash. Then adjust it out the additional number of "flats" that it took to make it exactly 0.100" longer. Lock the adjuster down. What you're doing here is the plunger of the tappet has a travel of 0.200" total and you're adjusting the pushrod so that the plunger is halfway in the middle of its travel so that it's got equal travel in both the up and down direction.

Good Luck

I need to adjust the valves

12th inlet and 14 exhaust ,4cyl engine all valves add to 9 ,,example--- no1 down adjust no8 ----no2 down adjust no7 all values add to 9 simple if you take your time to count the valve thats down subtract from 9 and then adjust that number ,this system works on all engine regardless of what the haynes book says ,6 cyl engine then its 13 ,and a 8 cyl engine then 17 ,in cases of 16 valves in a 4 cyl engine then its still the same as two valves work as one ,simple

Are the valves adjustable

I believe valves in modern vehicles are hydraulic and do not require adjustment. It is possible your vehicle may be different or has been modified. Solid lifters are not unknown just not real popular because of the maintenance they require. If there is a problem with the vehicle and you suspect valves are out of adjustment, you could remove the 4 bolts that hold the cover on and look. If there are adjusters, they will be immediately visable.

Hi. I know a thousandth of how we adjust the

The 4.0 engine has non-adjustable hydraulic lifters. The rocker arms are torqued to 19 foot lbs. No further adjustment is necessary.
If you have valve clatter it is likely due to worn pivots on the rockers or a worn cam lobe.
I would also check the valve springs (rare but they can break), oil pressure (low pressure from worn bearings or obstructed pickup screen) as that can cause lifter noise as well. If all is good, sometimes using an additive like marvel or lucas oil treatment will quiet them down.

EGR Valve needs cleaning or replacing

The link below is a diagram of the EGR valve. Looks like a mushroom with vacuum lines attached.

  • Label and disconnect the hoses from the valve. Carefully loosen and remove the retaining bolts, remembering that they are probably heat-seized and rusty. Use penetrating oil freely.
  • Remove the valve and clean the gasket remains from both mating surfaces.
  • Inspect the valve for any sign of carbon deposits or other cause of binding or sticking. The valve must close and seal properly; the pintle area may be cleaned with solvent to remove soot and carbon.

  • I hope this answers your question. Best of luck.

1987 xj6 ticking noise from right side of engine

My guess would be a sticking valve lifter. Buy a can of Gunk Motor Flush ( NOT radiator flush), use as directed, drain the oil and replace the filter, refill with clean oil, and see is the tick has gone away. Marvel Mystery Oil would work also if you can't find the Gunk.
