Question about 2004 Yamaha Royal Star Venture

1 Answer

Engine light I just purchased a 2004 Yamaha Royal Star Venture After riding in hot weather and stopping the motor, when I go to restart the engine light comes on and the engine starts and the light goes out, but quits as soon as I shift into first gear. Any ideas what is causing this ? Also, have ordered but have not received my owners manual. What type of oil should I be using in Canada in the summer with temperature range of about 60-90 degrees farenheit ?

I've restarted my RSTD in Southwest U.S. temperatures well above 100F after short stops and experienced the same symptoms; choking the engine fully prior to a restart and releasing the choke after the engine fires seems to eliminate the stall. I suspect that heat rising from the engine boils most of the fuel from the carburetor bowls, and full choke pulls enough fuel back in to keep the engine running.

The owner's manual recommends 20W-40 in that temperature range. DO NOT USE ANY OIL MARKED "ENERGY CONSERVING", it contains molybdenum disulfide (a friction modifier) and may make the clutch slip. Tourers that drive long distances and operate in a wide range of temperatures generally recommend synthetic lubricants - Mobil Delvac 1, Mobil-1 SUV and Shell Rotella T Synthetic are names that keep popping up. Personally, I've been using Rotella-T (T6) synthetic for 111,000 miles (and used Mobil-1 0W-40 for 9,000 miles prior to that), and the bike has required nothing but routine maintenance. I've used the bike in temperatures from 11F to 118F (ambient) without negative effect.

Is a 2009 royal star 1300 engine really just a detuned v max engine if so what are the differences?

Vmax is the strongest motor (most HP) , then comes the old style Venture (strong and dependable), then new style Royal Star (most restricted and self destructive). The motors have been so greatly detuned that they have lost some reliability. The carburetors are different, the cams (cam lobe/position) timing is different, the exhaust is restricted, I believe the CDI timing has been changed, and the counter balancer shaft in the main block of the motor has been removed causing more wear ,tear, and vibration in the motor. The spot in the motor is still in the motor for the counter balancer shaft in front of the crank shaft so it can be put in . there may be other changes but these are probably the most critical. It is not cost effective to upgrade a Royal Star unless you have a donor Vmax. I would never recommend the Royal Star for those reasons. I warned a friend off of the bike, he purchased one from a dealer, and with in a week of the purchase of the used unit the motor disintegrated. The only luck he had was that it happened just before the very end of the warranty. Yamaha replaced the entire motor , it would have cost too much to rebuild it. I worked a a Yamaha dealership for 25 years watching the complete evolution of the models with the V-four motor and to this day can not under stand why Yamaha did such a great disservice to the engine and the customers.

2005 yamaha royal star. what type and how much oil for the tranny?

The Royal Star crankcase lubricates engine, transmission and wet clutch at the same time, that's why frequent oil and filter changes are recommended. Use a high-quality multi-grade oil, 10W-30 in cold weather and 20W-40 in hot weather is recommended by the manufacturer. AVOID ANY OIL THAT SAYS ENERGY-CONSERVING (you'll see a seal on the bottle), that type of oil has a tendency to make the clutch slip. Personally, I recommend a multi-grade synthetic - I use Shell Rotella-T (T6) synthetic 5W-40 year-round, 111,000 miles since I changed from Mobil-1 0W-40 (9,000 on the Mobil-1) ; the engine's still tight, and the transmission and clutch are quiet.

Have a 2007 royal star venture bought new, excessive gear noise .took to dealer, changed clutch, prblem was worse, they changed rear end, was ok for 50 miles then started to lock up feeling and grind noise...

You might consider contacting Yamaha Motor Corporation, USA - customer relations (800) 962-7926, press "1" for Star Specialist. See if they would consider either exchanging the bike, or sending a factory specialist out to examine your ride.
