Question about 2003 Yamaha V Star 1100 Classic

1 Answer

Starter stalls and locks up.

When the motor turns over, it locks up. Sounds like the motor is trying to start under compression. Hit the starter switch a couple of three times it finally turns over and starts.

This is common with big compression V twins. The only suggestions i have, is to make sure your battery is new, as you want maximum voltage, mabey a bigger starter relay,( higher amp rating). Do a voltage check with engine running, make sure your charging system is good.

Starter clicks but car won't start

Turn on the headlights. If they're nice and bright, try the horn. If the horn sounds o.k. the battery is probably o.k. Locate the starter under the motor. Find a spot on the side of the starter that you can hit with a hammer. Have somebody turn the key while you hit the starter with the hammer. If it starts, you need a new starter. You can only do this a couple of times before it won't work at all.

Wont start

need a little more info. Does it turn over, or just a hafe a turn and then nothing? If this is the case, your compression solenoid is out. This is located right side down at the bottom of motor. When you try to start the bike, you will hear a tapping noise under a cover. That is it.
To get it started right now, you can take off the cover and there will be an arm with a spoon like lever. As you hit the starter, pull this spoon out and that will do the samething the compression solenoid does.
You will have to replace the solenoid someday.

Starter does not always engage

The "bendix" in the starter may be getting weak, or the battery may not have enough power to get the starter to engage every time. When you hit the starter button, does the starter sort of stall? If so, this is common, it's the starter trying to overcome the compression in the motor.

Have the battery tested at an auto parts store to ensure there is enough power in it. Sounds like it's strong enough to turn the motor with no compression (spark plug removed) but too weak to turn the motor with compression. Also check for loose or corroded wires.

Sounds like a weak driver's door lock/unlock actuator (rusted/oxidized) w/the trans clutch safety switch (Ignition Lock Switch) circuit8209a90.jpg
eeb47a1.jpg There is also the possibility the burglar alarm relay(starter kill) circuit is 'OPEN'. To check the starter solenoid circuit & starter, go to the U/H (under hood) Junction box and remove the starter relay. Jumper the starter solenoid circuit at the relay connections in the junction box 40a2524.jpg
Driver's power window problem could be the control switch itself, or the motor has stalled (if only stalled, a simple 'SHOCK' to the motor can get it working again). With the driver's door window switch held in up or down position (depending wether window is UP or DOWN), momentarily HIT the interior door panel at the arm rest 'INWARD' (not too much force... just a SHOCK) you don't want to break the door panel. If this doesn't work, you'll need to gain access to the motor & connector to see if power & ground are present at the window motor connector pins.3595015.jpg8bc893e.jpg

do you have commpression releases on your motor if not you may need to in stall this will ease the stress off your starter and your motor will turn over easier if you do have the releases not sure what you may need to do without hearing the drag to determine if gearing is issue
