The float for the fuel sending unit is more then likely hung up on the inside of the fuel tank, common problem, youll need to remove the speedometer housing on the tank and then remove the flat panel in the middle of the tank. lift up gently and look with a flashlight, youll see the float simply and gently bend (very little) the float rod so that the float dont hit the side of the tank and also look and make sure no hoses are in the way

I have a JD D110 riding mower and the gas gauge always shows full. It worked for awhile and then I filled the tank and it now always says full. How do I fix this?

If the wire from the sender to the gage is shorted out to ground the gage will always show full. Other possible is a defective sender or gage, even on a new machine

If my fuel gage on my 2005 Chevy Aveo doesn't work, how do you fix it? This started @ 78,000 miles

If your mileage has dropped to half, I would be worried about what is wrong with the car. Chances are it is running very rich and using way more fuel than it should.

Gas gauge does not work right after fill up it will read half to full then back to empty it is all over the place.

this problem is caused by the gas gage sending unit being defective, it is of course located inside the fuel tank.

2005 chevy malibu's gas gage is not working properly..reads more gas then is in tank... what could be possible problem?

most likely the fuel sending unit, within the fuel pump assembly within the tank....theres a replaceable printed circuit card within the tank which always gets dirty\worn out and contaminated....its very common on malibu's Cavaliers, sunfires etc...tank has to be lowered to replace it

Gas Gauge

hello,
the problem could be in the sending unit. this is a wired potentiometer and if you have a broken wire in the potentiometer, then that is what would happen.

you can verify this by grounding the sending unit wire to ground. you will have a full tank reading always. then use the car and see if it will still bounce and very erratic. if does not do that, then the sending unit is the problem. if it still do the erratic reading, then there are more problems.
