IH-4cyl w/ dlco-rmy dist.eng-40 ovr bor,hi er comp. hed,hedr,msd coil,points at .017-turns ovr no start,new balst res.,rotr,dist cap.Do I need to open points more? Had dist. out & , time to 0*TDC?

point gap should be around .021-.025" and timing should be set at 10 degrees BTDC static
using feeler gauges is always difficult to get it right so use a dwell meter as that is what point gap is all about

the angle of revolutions that allow maximum amount of time for the field current to saturate the coil and produce the highest voltage possible for the plugs
check that the condenser is not shorting out at the points
to check the system pull the coil lead out of the distributor cap and turn on the ignition
then using something insulated open the points manually
there should be a spark at the points and a spark from the ft lead to ground ( head , block etc )
If there is no spark across the points then they are shorting out and you need to check for insulated installation
to do a static timing, place the crank mark at 10 degrees btdc, turn on the ignition and move the distributor body until the points just open ( noise or spark across the points ) lock the distributor down at that point and that will be 10 degreess on the timing light at idle ( 650--750 rpm manual , 850--950 auto)

Have a 78 gs 750, new points, condensors, plugs, plug caps, swapped coils from another gs, and still cylinders 2 &3 are not as hot to the touch as 1&4. Compression checked at acceptable values...

Does the 2 & 3 cylinders have any oil smear on the plugs.? please pull off all the plugs and check the performance. Check the gaps in the plugs. now since you did compression check , I would advice to have the firing of the 2 & 3 plugs with the plug attached checked.
Now correct if the gaps are down or reduce slighly if the intensity is no so good.
now start the engine and remove plug 1 , if it stall , try again with 4, now try with 2 & 3.
Check if the firing order is misplaced or there is lack of HT in the distribution.

Lost all elce, power while riding my 1980 kawaski 750 ltd 4cyl. just shut down, no elec. power at all now. ck'ed battrey and terminals

It is either the stator plate or coil if not getting spark, if it is just the electronics part, then it is the cdi box or equivelant

1977 cb 750 honda start and idle seem ok but bad loss of power

Check if the points plate is within the marks, it sounds as if the ignition timming is behind ( r e tard).
Recheck the valve clearance and the float level in the float chamber of the carbs, synchro the carbs and reset the air - mixture .
