Question about 1984 Yamaha FJ 1100

Starter wont engage.

I just got this bike. its an FJ1100 with a 1200 motor put in it. my issue is that the starter wont turn if you just push the start button. but if i take a screwdriver and cross the terminals i can get the start to spin but the bendix wont extend to catch the teeth and turn the motor over. i know whats wrong with the bendix but i cant figure out why the starter button doesnt operate the starter. this is my first bike and i hate wiring working on a wiring harness, but this bike push starts ok and is in way to good of shape just to disguard it. please help me, im on a limited budget and i need this bike for when school starts.

A couple things to check, the starter button is on a safety circuit with the kickstand and the transmission, and the kill switch, check all of these to see if one is on, make sure it in neutral, make sure the kick stand is up or down or where ever it is supposed to be and make sure the kill switch is off. The screwdriver will jump the starter because it is way past the safety switches. If everything checks out, take the switch apart and polish the contacts, probably all corroded. And make sure the battery is good. Hope this helps.

Are u crossing the terminal at the button end or the starter motor terminals? if the termianal u r crossing is at the starte end check the button terminal end and cross them. It could be just abadly corroded button. If not that replace the starter relay, buy a haynes mannual to see where is located, the mannual will be a good investment.

I have a new battery but my Harley won't turn over after riding around town for awhile. Can't even push start it!

I would first try new plugs. Then I would check temperature sensor. What is your battery voltage when it is hot and won't turn over. Could also be the main solenoid contact. Also of course could be a starter winding breaking down with heat but I would try the battery first and the other things above.

KTM 530 2009 starter spins but motor will not turn over

Hi, Anonymous the starter clutch is a separate mechanical gear driven component that is activated by the starter motor, it engages the clutch pack gear or the flywheel gear to turn over the engine. It has an internal mechanism that allows the gear to turn in one "ONE DIRECTION" only and once the engine starts allows the gear to free spin with engine rotation. If the starter gear free spins in "BOTH DIRECTIONS" then the drive gear has failed, it might be serviceable on some models but usually needs to be replaced.

Just replaced old battery. When I go to start, won't turn over. After a few attempts battery is completely drained.

Charge your battery at no more than 10% of its rated Ahr rating. When it is charged, place a thick cable from the possitive of the starter motor, (not the solenoid!) and intermittantly touch the positive terminal of the battery.
The motor should spin freely without engaging the starter dog. If it spind easily, then the motor is OK.
If you then connect a wire between the starter cable (thick terminal) to the solenoid terminal and then touch the thick cable on the positive battery terminal. Does the engine turn? If it doesn't;

Put the bike on a paddock stand or get someone to help you steady the bike.
Put the bike in third gear with the ignition switched OFF and turn the rear wheel or push the bike forward. If it moves against compression, the engine is sound and not too tight.
Hope that gives you an insight as to where your problem lies.

1992 500 vulcan, Starter will not engage. I have to put bike into gear and roll engine over a bit, then slip back into neutral and hit starter and then it will engage. This is a intermittent issue.

Try blowing out the starter motor with an air line a build up of dust can make it stick, If this wont work and it may not. then take it appart and check for wear the gear should not wobble on the shaft . Finally a good clean and grease should sort it

1999 ttr 250 starter motor is not engaging

I would guess it is the starer clutch, also called the one way clutch. I went on to www.bikebandit.com and looked up your bike and it has a nice exploded veiw of your starter clutch . I will try to put a direct link to it , hopefully it will take you to it. http://www.bikebandit.com/houseofmotorcycles/yamaha-motorcycle-tt250rl-1999/o/m7707
if not go put in your bike and look under starter clutch.
