SOURCE: found radiator leaking and topped up coolant

Sufficient fluid in the reservoir does not necessarliy mean that the radiator is full. If you have fixed the radiator leak, let the engine cool down and the radiator will draw coolant in from the reservoir until it (the radiator) is full. Make sure the reservoir does not go dry while this is happening - and do not remove the radiator cap until after everything cools off completely.
There's no check valve in the cooling system, although the radiator cap does serve such a purpose when there's a reservoir attached.

IF YOU CANT GET A LEAKDOWN TEST DONE ,NEED TO SEE IF THERE IS A SMALL HOLE BY WERE IT APPEARS TO BE COMMING FROM.IF SO ,SOUNDS LIKE A MECHANICAL SEAL FAILURE ,ALSO SOMETIMES IT IS AS SIMPLE AS A LOOSE HOSE CLAMP AND YOU DONT NOTICE IT BECAUSE IT TAKES PRESSURE FOR IT TO BUILD UP OR HEAT FOR IT TO GET SOFT,IN TERMS OF RADIATOR HOSE ,SOMETIMES IT CAN EVEN BE A PIN HOLE OR SLICE IN THE HOSE,BEST THING IS TO CLEAN THE BIKE AND TRY TO LET IDLE TILL FAN COMES ON AND WATCH,CHEAPEST ANYWAYS

Expansion tank and coolant reservoir in 2007 pontiac torrent.could one of them have a small hole in it , i lose fluid on driver side fender well

Hi,
A coolant leak is unlikely, but it is possible that the expansion tank cap is allowing coolant to seep-out.
There would be 2 reasons for this;
1. The seal in the cap is failing & allowing water to escape at too low a temperature.
2. You have an engine overheating problem & the coolant is forcing it's way past the cap seal, in the way it is designed to in the event of overheating.

Check your coolant temperature.
If it's running really hot, find out why.
If it's running at normal temperature, change the expansion-tank cap.
Best of luck.

Im trying to replace my coolant and I'm not sure how much to put in. It's the 4.3 L v6 in a 1988 GMC c1500

Don't know the exact amount but around 2-2 and a half gallon. Do this use one gallon straight antifreeze and one gallon water run engine for a few minutes then turn off. Check level and top off radiator. Add appropriate level to side tank

2005 Honda VTX 1300 R overheating

Hi, Richlarose and the usual suspects are:
1. Low coolant level.
2. Restricted radiator air flow.
3. Faulty thermostat.
4. Coolant pump or fans inoperative.
5. Vent hose crimped.
6. Air in the coolant and needs bleeding.
7. Engine idling too long or bike moving too slow.
8. Coolant too old needs to be replaced.
9. Faulty temperature sensor, wiring or connector.

I have a 2003 VW Passat 1.8T. When I first start and drive the car, the coolant temp is normal. After a few miles, it will suddenly climb to the red, and STOP check coolant comes on. If I loosen the cap to...

Has coolant level been going down in return reservoir at all, as in have you had to add coolant recently to bring it up to top level? Have you tried running engine from cold, with heater on and let it run up to normal temperature with cap off return reservoir? If not do so, and watch level in reservoir and if it goes down, add as needed until engine running at normal, and not overheating. Allow rad fan to kick on & off a few times before re-installing cap on reservoir. Pay close attention to engine temp while doing this. If it goes high, shut it off and let cool. Be careful, my son's Passat just had overheat problem and turned out to be impeller on water pump ( internally) was spinning on shaft of pump. Thermostat is certainly a consideration if coolant is full, and all air bled out. Keep me posted on what happens when you run with cap off and keep reservoir full. Don't forget, heater on while doing this.

My Chevy Venture 1999 when I drived the temperature was normally, but when I stay the temperature was hot. I changed the termosthator but the problem is continually.

Check the coolant reservoir and the radiator for proper coolant level. If low you probably have a leaking intake gasket or possibly a head gasket leak. The intake leak will be visible on either end of the intake manifold, located at the very top portion of the engine. The head gasket usually shows up at the rear head, nearest the belt. You could have a water pump leaking and this would show coolant on the ground under the right front of the engine, more so when the engine is running. They are very common for all 3 problems.

WHERE DOES THE ANTI FREEZE GO

Hi, there should be a white plastic reservoir with a black lid that just pops off, just follow the smaller black hose from the radiator to it. ( i don't remember if its on the left side or the right side on that year ) there is only 2 reservoirs under the hood and one is for wiper fluid and the other is for the antifreeze. also the top of the lids will say in writing on top which is for which. ps. Also you want to add antifreeze with engine running because if the system is low, once the engine reaches normal operating temperature it will **** the coolant from reservoir to engine/radiator and you might need to add more coolant to reservoir. yz-maniac.

2005 VTX1300R - red temperature light comes on? How do I add fluid to radiator?

The radiator cap is under the fuel tank. You will have to unbolt it an move it back for access. Top off the coolant while the engine is running. The expansion tank fill is behind the side cover.
