I have an 85 GL1200 aspencade. Engine shuts off after a few minu

I have an 85 GL1200 aspencade. I've just started having a problem with the engine shutting down while I am riding. When I first took off I rode about a mile and the engine shut down. It started about 5 minutes later. I drove off and a couple of miles later it shut down again. I looked for possible loose wires that I could see without taking anything off and everything looked OK. I then rode another 80 miles with no problem. When I started home I got about 5 miles and the same thing happened again. After a few minutes it started and I rode the 80 miles back home with no more problems. Today I started out and got less than a mile when the engine shut down again. After a couple of minutes it started again and I drove it back home. I have started it and let it Idle for 10 minutes at a time and no problems. When the engine shut down each time the RPM's read 0 even though the bike was in gear and the engine was turning over while it coasted to a stop. I noticed that when I turn off the kill switch while the motor is running it still show RPM's, so I don't think it is in the kill switch circuit. Do you have any ideas of where to look and what to look for? Any help would be appreciated.

It isn't a fuel problem. The RPM's go to zero on the digital dash while it is coasting to a stop in gear. If I turn off the kill switch and let it coast to a stop it shows RPM's going down. It's not the ignition switch because nothing else is affected, radio, lights, digital dash, etc.

if it's not fuel check to see how strong the spark is if you have a bad coil when it gets hot it could malfunction if all that is good you are going to be busy looking for an electrical issue

    good luck

1985 Honda GL 1200 Aspencade Gold Wing won't start

Hi, Anonymous before testing any electrical component in the Starting System it is "IMPERATIVE" that you have a fully charged battery of 12.5 volts or more and be able to pass a proper "LOAD" test if necessary, you may have a preliminary reading of 12.5 volts or more but little or zero amperage, the battery is faulty and must be replaced. AGM type batteries fall into this scenario more so than lead acid batteries.
1. Ignition Switch not in the "ON" position.
2. Engine Run Switch in the "OFF" position.
3. Check the battery terminals for damage or corrosion check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter.
4. Bank angle sensor needs a reset or is faulty.
5. FOB battery low or dead.
6. Faulty ignition switch.
7. Faulty starter button.
8. Faulty kickstand, clutch, neutral safety switch.
9. Security alarm needs a reset.
10. Starter relay, solenoid, starter have failed or circuit wiring faulty.
11. Starter armature or field coils have failed.
12. Main fuse or circuit breaker may be blown or faulty.
13. The electric starter is working but starter clutch has failed.
14. Check for engine trouble codes.

My 1984 gl1200 aspincade will not start, my neutral lite will not come on.does the neutral switch in the front engine cover. if that switch is out will it stop the start botton from working

Make sure the engine kill switch in the off position ?
If the neutral switch is malfunctioning it can send a wrong signal which should be countered by pulling the clutch.
