Question about 1978 Yamaha XS 650 E

1 Answer

Rubber 'gasket' on speedometer.

I picked up a speedo for a 78 xs 650 in pieces. I'm not sure how the gasket between the body and glass cover goes on. Tried for 2 days to get it to go on....nothing ...If I had a picture and some kind of instructions, I think I can do it. It fights me all the way.Any help would be truly appreciated.Thank you ...Mike

How do I replace the gasket?

The Speedmeter/Housing assembly is held onto to Fuel Tank by placing the rubber cushion on to the stand-off piece (Part of the Tank on top, welded on)
and sliding the Speedo Assy over it making sure that rubber cusion while still attached to the tack fits into the recessed area on the underside of the speedo housing. Then in front the speedo housing is bolted on with 2 bolts.
You should really have a Service Manual for your Bike if you are doing this level of repairs to your Bike.

Tachometer speedometer

Hi, AJ for this situation I would call my local dealer or reputable shop's service/parts department and inquire about any possible quick fix, answers, or parts inquiry. If necessary, transport your bike to the dealer or shop and have a professional technician take it for a test drive, if it is in running condition, and give you a written estimate of repairs and answer any specific questions you may have about your problem. I have a Yamaha that I cant find out what model it is. I think its the xs 650 but im not for sure. All I know is that it was made 7/78 and the Serial number is 2Lo - 105468. It has twin cams, elc. starter...

It is a 1979 Yamaha XS400F. Although it was built in 78 it is a 79 model year with that serial number. 392cc plus the serial number both ties up with it being an XS400.

there is no heater. remove the cable from front wheel to speedo, lube it with 3 in 1 oil (or any other thin oil), remove speedometer and put a few drops of oil where the the cable goes into it. my first bike was a brand new 1982 xs400 when i was 17, ah the memories

Yamaha 650 special valve cover screw will not tighten

it needs a ne thread [ helicoil]
or you can try machining doen the cover so the bolt goes down lower & use thread lock aswell
just get it to a point where it feels firm or youll end up pulling the thread again ok
Cheers Rob

Two questions: Oil leak from top of engine; bike shut down ridin

the battery terminal being loose would cause that, since the rectifier would freak out. the leak you speak of is probably not eh head gasket ro you would have compression problem with amount of oil that can run down the bike. It sounds like a corner on the valve cover gasket or something I think there is a cover for the valve adjust ment there so check it out the gasket may be worn. no biggie get a new one.
help this helps
