Line up the top of the pin on the face of the crank gear at 12 o'clock so it lines up to the notch just above it on the block. The intake cam gear on the left (looking from the front of the car) needs to have the "I" stamped in the gear lined up at 12 o'clock position with the notch on the metal cover above it and the exhaust cam gear on the right side is done the same but line up the "E" stamped in the gear at 12 o'clock with the notch above it. Make sure they stay in position when the belt is installed. My cam gear stamped letters and the notches above them did not line up perfectly to each other. I wouldn't worry if they are a few millimeters off.

What is the timing marks for a 2000 kia sportage?

the timing marks are as follows... if you are not able to see the picture the intake cam gear will line up with the mating mark on the rear cover .... the "I" needs to be straight up... the exhaust cam the E needs to be straight up. the crankshaft mark is a nothch in the rear of the crank gear which needs to line up with a pointer on the front of the aluminum oil pump housing. the keyway on the crank needs to be vertical. the marks on the rear cover are dimples in the cover. this is an interferance engine DO NOT ROTATE CRANK OR CAMS WITH BELT OFF. IF YOU HAVE BROKEN THE TIMING BELT DAMAGE TO ENGINE HAS ALREADY OCCURED AND YOU WILL NEED A VALVE JOB!!!! there is no exception on this engine. if you have tried to crank it over and the belt is broken the head is no good!

My tensioner broke and messed up my timing on my 2000 kia sportage. I need to know how to re-time my engine.

ok this is easy but get a friend to help. i assume that because you know the tensioner broke that u've gotten everything out of the way on the timing belt.

in the bottom pulley you will see a notch and a little indicator line on the block line those up.

next line the "E" on the right pulley up to the small marker in the top of the backing plate. if you need me to clear this up just ask

then align the "I" on the other pulley to that mark above it and slap on your new belt and your good to go.
