Question about 2007 Yamaha V Star Custom

2 Answers

Bike will not turn over. Starter is not engaging.

Bike will not turn over. In nuetral, starter spins but will not engage. Starter is functional. In gear, there is no response from the starter with the clutch pulled in. Does this mean that the starting circuit cutoff relay is bad?? The Clymer manual suggests that this is the case. The bike is a 2007 V-Star 1100 Custom. Thanks.

It looks like you are on track. A starter gets to drive the engine when the relay trips and the start mechanism is engaged. A relay provides the switching power to do this. If the relay can be taken apart, one can polish the contacts, and make it serviceable again.

Kawasaki starter not engaging

Hi, Ricky the starter drive/Bendix/clutch is a mechanical gear driven component that engages the clutch pack ring gear to turn over the engine. It has an internal mechanism that allows the gear to turn in one direction and once the engine starts allows the drive gear to free spin. If gear free spins in both directions then the drive gear has failed, it is not serviceable and needs to be replaced.

Starter not engaging

The starter solenoid mounted on top of the starter has two functions, as the key is operated the solenoid slides the starter pinion to engage the flywheel, THEN operates heavy duty contacts to power the motor. The solenoid is not engaging the pinion.1726daf9-e191-4168-8e99-cab63cae5995.gif

KTM 530 2009 starter spins but motor will not turn over

Hi, Anonymous the starter clutch is a separate mechanical gear driven component that is activated by the starter motor, it engages the clutch pack gear or the flywheel gear to turn over the engine. It has an internal mechanism that allows the gear to turn in one "ONE DIRECTION" only and once the engine starts allows the gear to free spin with engine rotation. If the starter gear free spins in "BOTH DIRECTIONS" then the drive gear has failed, it might be serviceable on some models but usually needs to be replaced.

If your starter clicks and you can hear the starter motor spinning but the engine is not turning over, your starter clutch, sometimes called the "overrunning clutch", is bad. Try this site for your starter breakdown. http://www.bikebandit.com Click on OEM parts, find your bike, and look under electrical for the starter.

Starter works but gears seem to free spin, wont crank engine

sounds like the sprag clutch has failed. If you can see the large gear that sits behind the rotor and its turning but the rotor isnt turning the sprag clutch has failed. Very costly. usualy you would have a missed start eg not engaging every now and then before this fails all together.

When hooking my new vrod battery up i can hear the starter spinning when i try to attach the ground...what am i doing wrong

When you discovered your battery was kaput, you were probably trying to start your bike at the time. I have seen on rare occasions that when this happens, the starter solenoid gets "stuck" in the "engaged" positon. Try rocking your bike backwards and forwards a few times with the transmission in high gear. Rock the bike while shifting the tranny until you get it into high gear. The with the clutch out, rock the bike and turn the engine over a few times. Shift the bike back down to neutral and try to connect the battery. Rocking the bike while in gear rotates the outer clutch drum. If the starter jack shaft is still engaged with the ring gear on the outer clutch drum, rocking the bike a bit will turn the drum allowing the spring in the starter to pull the jack shaft and starter gear back out of engagement. I hope this helps.

1992 jeep yj will not turn over

Try jumping the solenoid, pull the actuator wire off the solenoid(the small one)This will engage the starter so make sure your in nuetral or park, run a wire from the solenoid actuator to the positive battery post,if the starter engages your ignition switch or starter relay have become faulty,if the starter does'nt engage the solenoid has gone bad.Post back if you need more help.
