Question about 2003 Harley Davidson FXST Softail Standard

1 Answer

'03 FXSTI won't start

Due to other mechanical resons, Bike was down for a year. Covered but outside. Changed battery siphoned out old gas about 3gal added new gas before cranking. As crazy as it sounds rocked the Bike back and forth to swish gas around in tank. I'm thinking Injectors clogged, I'm hopeing the "good" gas might penetrate through "carmalized" gas. Then again I used to tell my kids about Santa and the Tooth Fairy.LOL Ant help would be appriciated. Did I mention I'm hopeing to ride to Lake George. Help me, my people will meet your people, Jack is on me.

    Hey guys,

I wanna thank Valstem. That was a road I didn't want to go down this close to Americade. I spoke with the President of my club today and he reminded me of an old time trick, I associated also with carborators, Starting Fluid/Ether. Just a quick press right before I hit the Start button. I shot the spray right under the Air Filter from a distance, just above the seat, not into it. The first breathe of air She took had a little shot of Ether in it. I have a High Air Flow kit on my intake and OEM Aif Filter Cover. She Turned Over on that first shot. Old Dogs, Old Tricks. I hope this can help someone else.

New gas won't clean the fuel system. I see no way out except dismantling and cleaning the system with, ironically, carb cleaner. Then that might not do it completely.

Good idea on the ether. You know, I had practically forgotten that old can I have up on the shelf in the shed. Glad the outcome was good. Ride safe man.

That bike is only one year old. SURELY it's still covered by a manufacturer's warranty.

Is it possibly nearly out of gas?

Hi, I have a 2009 MT-03, the engine management like came on and the neutral light stays on even when I am in gear.

Hi, Anonymous it should be noted that the reasons EFI lights constant or flashing, will or will not start, turns over or not conditions varies from the year, make, and model and you should always refer to your owners/service manual for proper diagnostic procedures. It should also be noted that any type of prior work or event IE: adding accessories, electrical curiosity/adventures, laying bike down/crashes, rainstorms/bike washings just before EFI light issues started can be significant hints/aids into tracking down the gremlin, also carry the appropriate jumper wire to access fault codes to reduce the risk of being stranded or towed, that being said the usual suspects are:
1. Faulty Fuel Pump, fuse or system relay switch.
2. Battery starting to fail due to old age/damage, perform a load test.
3. Discharged battery, check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
4. Faulty switches/sensors: run/off, ignition, clutch lever, neutral, side stand, tip over, fuel, and or their connections.
5. Broken wire or worn insulation exposing wire to a ground situation especially inside wire harness at tight bends around fairing brackets, under dash panels, under fuel tanks over cylinder heads etc. Many harnesses are open on the ends that will allow water to enter and accumulate at v-bends.
Dielectric grease and contact cleaner are your best friends for wire/cable/harness connectors, look for corroded, broken, or loose pins/sockets. For more information about your issue please visit the websites below. Good luck and have a nice day.

Is the smoke dark (blackish) or bluish?

If dark, your carburetor could be running rich, causing the smoke, and losing power due to choking the engine (too much fuel-to-air mixture)

If so, might need rejetting.

2004 fxsti jump start and as soon as I took cable off bike died. Do I need to replace regulator or do I need a new alternator?

Charge the battery first. Check battery voltage with a multimeter. Start the bike and check battery voltage again. It sould be close to the same, or a little higher. Rev the bike to about 2000 rpm, while checking battery voltage. Reading should be between 13.8-14.2vdc or thereabout. If not you will need to check both the regulator and stator. Is this the original battery in the bike? If so, replace it!

1982 Yamaha Seca Turbo (XJ650LJ) Had the carbs

Mine was stored for 20 years, I ended up replacing the seat and needles, cleaning them thoroughly and when I tried starting it, nothing!! No gas was going to the carbs, it turned out to be my gas pump, it was seized by the old gas remains 'varnish' so I had to clean it numerous times, soaked it in gas cleaner (short period at a time 15 minutes or so, being a very powerful cleaner, you cannot leave it for long without causing greater problems, thus I was able to get the pump going by boosting it with my car batterie, having more cranking amps directly to the pump, the pump was able to release itself from the old crusty varnish.

Hi, Gregore_z28 and the usual suspects are:
1. Fuel tank empty.
2. Fuel supply valve/petcock turned off.
3. Fouled spark plugs.
4. Engine flooded as a result of overuse of the enricher.
5. Vacuum hose to the fuel supply valve/petcock disconnected, broken, cracked, or pinched.
6. Fuel valve/petcock or filter clogged.
7. Fuel line to carburetor or throttle body pinched or kinked.
8. Carburetor float stuck.
9. Fuel injectors clogged.
10. Severely discharged or damaged battery, you need 12.5 volts or better and be able to pass a load test if necessary.
11. Check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
12. Loose or corroded wire connection at the coil, battery or plug between ignition sensor and module.
Spark plug cables in bad condition and shorting, cable connections loose, or connected to the wrong cylinders.
13. Ignition timing incorrect due to a faulty ignition coil, ignition module or sensors (MAP, CMP, CKP, O2, TPS, ETP, IAC,or BAS).
14. Faulty neutral, clutch lever, or kickstand safety switch.
15. Faulty fuel pump or fuse or relay.
16. Faulty CDI box if applicable.
17. Tilt sensor needs a reset.
18. Security system not disarming alarm needs a reset.

Yamaha mto3 sitting for 3 monts outside, battery

try cleaning the carb completely off the bike, make sure you take the jets out and clean them well.

They are probably gummed up....gas does not last long after 30 days anymore before it begins to varnish and clog parts.

CANT GET VW BEETLE STARTED

hi if its not been started for five years and it is trying to start but just won,t keep running get someone to tow you and jump start it because i suspect the compressions will be low due to a build up of damp carbon valves sticking all in all the seats on the head and valve will not be seating so if you persisist with the jump start it forces the valves onto the seats and will clear the debrie if it still won,t go check your compressions yates210456
