Question about 2003 Suzuki VL 1500 Intruder LC

1 Answer

When starting the bike, the prelube pump runs for a bit till it is ready for starting. Well just this season I have noticed that the pump runs either longer time or continues to run after the starting of the engine. Whats up? I have changed the oil and filter this season already. I always use the recommended oil and filter. Help!

Gas is so poorly refined these days, Youll notice the fuel stabilizer says it is only good for about 30 days. although i cant give specific instructions on how to clean out the clogged jet in your carb, if it runs on starting fluid, a clogged jet is deffinately your problem. start with the float bowl make sure it has clean fuel in it and the primary jet is usually in the bolt that holds the bowl on make sure its clean and if the float hanging down opens the needle valve and fuel flows your good to that point. if the engine still wont run, or only runs with the choke on. get some carb cleaner spray and go at it, make sure you can blow through every port and jet, BUT WATCH YOUR EYES you never know where that stuff is going to exit.

next year winterize it, drain the fuel and run it till it dies.
or i like to winterize my engines by replacing the regular fuel with a little bit of aviation fuel as that stuff can sit for years, just dont operate or mow for more than 2 or 3 minutes on it.

Good luck

I have a 1981 Suzuki GS1000L. I was just getting it ready for the season but when I tried to start it, I noticed gas coming out of the air filter housing. Any idea what might be causing this and how much...

The reason for this is a float valve is sticking and the overflowing fuel is exiting the rear of the carbs into the airbox this will also leak through into the engine making it difficult to start the engine, if the bike was running fine when you last used it the value of the repaire would be depending on who you took it to and their labour costs which vary from place to place, as there are prob no parts involved and only removal and cleaning of the carb integrals, if this is a uk bike it is a reason for failure on the mot test, paul

After getting bike ready for season.the rear jug wasnt getting i replaced coild thinking it went bad.nope?.although after kepping it running for a period of cleared up and ran on both...

I'd replace the plug first.
If that isn't the issue, I'd go over the entire ignition system from top to bottom.
When yu changed the coil, did you also change the plug wire? sometimes they can crack, and they will arc to ground, so that the plug gets no spark....until the wire warms up and the crack in it closes enough that it doesn't arc anymore.

The. Yellow light in speedo looks like a small. Car engine lights up when turn on. Run button. Till. It reaches. Fuel pressure. Then it goes off. U can. Start .. let's u no when to start a fuel....

Either the sensor is faulty or the fuel pump can't reach pressure.
If the engine loses power at full throttle after a few seconds it is the pump if not I would change the sensor.
Hope that helps.

Bike starts and runs for 5 min the shuts off and wont start again till the next day and then you need starting fluid

Try running with the fuel cap cracked open a bit - you may have a blocked fuel tank breather.

Carb problems

if & when you do get it running again, does the bike have a petcock at the gas tank? if it does, when the bike is running before you are about to park it for 2 weeks, turn the petcock off and let the bike die on its own (from fuel starvation). this will ensure there is (almost) no gas in the carb to cause any gumming. you can drain the little bit that is left with the carb bowl drain screw. then when you're ready to ride again, simply turn the petcock on, wait a few seconds for the carb bowl to fill, then hit the start button.
