Question about 1994 Yamaha XV 535 Virago DX

1 Answer

I have a xv535 that has sat for some years. athough the bike has started with no hesitation i cant seem to get the bike to continue running when i put it in gear. we have tried the tricks to un stick the clutch plates but the problem continues. our next step was trying to re adjust the cluctch cable. do you think this is my problem and if so can u tell me the method of adjusting at the top and bottom of the cable. the cable coming out of the clutch lever was cut. is this a neutral safety switch? could a faulty switch be the reason for my troubles?

The neutral switch is wired from gearbox selector barrel, internally.
Clutch normally binds when left unused even for a week for some bikes. Oil choice can help but not markedly.
Top and bottom clutch cable is adjustment for free play (top) and amount of take-up and return (bottom).
The wire or cable (if electrical) is to ensure bike cannot be STARTED in gear with clutch engaged.
Issues maybe arising from gummed carby's, some carby cleaner flush should sort it out. Check also inlet manifold has not cracked or split.
Cheers.

Bike sat up for 3 or 4 years. recently cleaned the carb, changed the plug and oil and bike started. Tried starting it recently and it wont. Seem to be backfiring sometimes when kicking it over.

clean plug .. although new plug if old fuel or unbalanced carb it may quickly foul. if this works you may need help to work out whats causing plug to foul.

My bike sat in garage for about a year without being started.I fired it up and now it runs rough and motor hesitates when shifting. Ifilled tank with fresh gas

You will need to clean the complete fuel system to include the carb. After time the fuel turns to varnish and will plug up the jets in the carb. Remove the carb and clean it throughly that should fix your problem.

Bike has sat up for a year or so,wont start, cranks fine, has spark, maybe bad fuel ?

If no fuel stabilizer was added while the bike sat for a year or so.
It is most likely bad fuel with gum deposits.
This can can create some problematic symptoms for you.

It is vital the bad fuel to be cleared from tank/lines and carbs.
You may need the fuel system cleaned as the gum deposits can cause major headaches in the carbs and jets. If the system is not cleaned and even after you get the bike running, you could be miles away and have the fuel fowl jets/injectors, causing shut down.

Check the spark plugs carefully. Oil on the plugs may just need cleaning. Once you get the bike running the oil should burn off if the rings are still in good shape.

Motor needs clean Air, Clean Gas and a hot spark.

Good luck!

I installed a new battery in my 1987 535 Virago. When I turn on the key, nothing comes on. I have no power. The bike sat for 3 years. Any ideas?

Have you checked the main fuse from the positive terminal to the wire harness? I'ts contained in a white long clamshell type enclosure.

Should i do a total teardown of a bike thats sat for 15 years

If it's sat for 15 years, whether it's a dirt bike or a car, you should definately see if it runs first....

If it DOES run...then I would do some maintenance.

If it DOESN'T run, then it's wise to just check a few things first.

Water in the gas tank? Spark plug giving spark? Does it try to turn over? Is there oil?

If if seems effed, then just tear it down...it's cheaper to rebuild it in the long run, then to fix piece by piece, and end up fixing things that didn't need to be fixed.

I've never owned, ridden, or worked on a dirtbike. It's just all common sense.

Hesitation

if it sat for 4 years with gas in the carburetors you will have to clean them--that goo in them will keep breaking up and stop up everything.
