Connections problem

Question: What are the extra wires used for on the power cable for my fishfinder?
I found this on the carmin website under questions and answers. I think your cable is ok to use according to this.
--> Answer: Not all of the wires in the harness are required for use. To connect the unit to the power source, only the black & red wires are required (black to ground, red to positive). Here are descriptions of the other wires in the harness:
  • The Blue wire is used for a NMEA data out connection to another NMEA compatible device. The fish finder outputs NMEA 0183 version 3.01. The receiving device must be compatible with this format and looking for the NEMA sentences DPT, DBT, MTM, or VHW.
  • The Brown wire is used for a NMEA data in connection to receive data from another NMEA compatible device.
  • The Yellow wire is used to connect to an external buzzer or alarm to alert you to any alarms which have been set to sound on the device. The Yellow GARMIN wire connects to the negative end of the external alarm. The positive return on the alarm will connect to the red positive wire of GARMIN.
  • The green, white, and any other colors present have no connection purpose related to your fishfinder. The 18 Pin connector wiring harness is used by several other devices which utilize these wires.
If the device is only being connected to power & do not require a NMEA interface, PC connection, or external alarm support, only the red & black wires are required.

What is the connection path from Garmin 72 to raymarine c80, using NMEA 1083

I'm taking this as you want to send the gps information to your C80 not receive from the C80? If this is the case the brown wire on the garmin is the nmea data out +. The Black wire is considered nmea out neg (-) of the garmin. So hook the garmin brown to the white on the raymarine. Hook the black from the garmin to the green on the raymarine. That means you are outputting lat/long info to the raymarine from the garmin.

Garmin Edge 305 switches off during use while mounted on the Garmin bike mount. If kept in pocket it works fine. Does it have something to do with the vibration from the bike while on the bike mount?

Could be yes. There are contacts inside the device that become sensitive to vibrations after a while.

I have seen on Internet that it may also be due to USB plug that acts on these contacts.
Anyway in this situation there is no other way than opening the devices and soldering contacts or adding wires to replace these contacts.

As opening device is not at all easy, I recommend you send your device to Garmin support.

Otherwise please check the relevant procedure on the internet

I can do the same ride with the unit on different bikes and get a variation in total ascent by as much as 200 feet

When starting your device, it acquires sttaelites progressively, then the altitude accuracy is not good at the beginning, so starting altitude and final altitude are not identical if you ride a loop.
Other possible cause is that the cumulation of small errors makes cumulative altitude to vary.
Garmin connect offers a feature that corrects the altitude by smoothing the waypoints, and also by using topology points.
Go to http://connect.garmin.com/
Then upload your data from your garmin device to the garmin connect database, and use the feature named "altitude correction" bottom left of the screen where your ride is detailed

Speaker doesn't work when using Garmin on my motorcycle but it works in my truck. got any ideas?

there is a speaker on the cradle for the car and none on the bike cradle probably due to the exposure to the elements when on the bike and i think the Zumo must be powered from the bike for the speaker on the Zumo to work when riding.

How to hardwire to HD motorcycle

Black or ground to chasis, Red to battery if you want it to have power all the time.
To the fuse box to a switched line if you want it to turn off with the bike.
Be sure to have a fuse in line with the power wire to prevent damage to the GPS umit or a fire on the bike.

Make sure that the bike's electrical connection to the GPS unit is actualy not having power once you turn the key off in the bike. This GPS turns on with external power. It is inherent in to its design.

In the case were you cannot have the bike's power source to the GPS turn off with the key, see if you can wire a small in-line switch in series with the GPS unit so that you have an external power switch. This should be easy to do.

The models I have used from Garmin have their own power switch. You should be able to use its power switch to turn it off.

Internal wiring

Hi - I have a Garmin GPS 126 in bits on my desk ready for a new cable as the socket in the back has some broken pins.

Also refer to the Garmin GPS to PC Wiring Instructions here on the Garmin site: http://www8.garmin.com/support/faqs/faq.jsp?faq=68

The internal 8 pin white connector on to the back of the circuit board is as follows:

1 Red Positive
2 Black Negative
3 Yellow Data Out
4 Green Data In
5 not used
6 not used
7 White Alarm

All the best, Tony at KiwiGPS, New Zealand
