Question about 2004 kawasaki VN 1500 Vulcan Classic

Drilled into the water jacket to insert a quick sert, used permatex for filler between quick sert and tapped stud hole. permatex good for 300 f. will this hold?

many engines have bolts that are threaded into the water jacket
the procedure is to use a quality liquid thread sealer when installing the stud and tensioning it up
the sealer then goes hard but pliable and a seal is formed in the threads yet the stud can still be removed at a later time with out thread damage to either component
maybe you can use the same principle for your problem

How to remove a broken stud in head


Some times the broken stud will not come out and will have to be drilled and a heli coil installed if all other methods are unsuccessful. What I try is drilling a hole in the stud ( !/8 drill bit ) and using a torx socket tap it into the hole with a hammer and use a ratchet. If the stud is going to come out, this method usually works.

If I break the rear stud on a 318 manifold head bolt in the rear or front stud and if I drill it out and see antifreeze come out have drilled through the water jacket or is it open to the block


It is very rare to through holes to the water jacket, especially the holes of fairly important studs and bolts. It happens mostly in die cast items such as some cylinder blocks and some holes to the oily parts are through and also some to where there is air or exhaust gas on the other side.

There is no need to despair yet even if you have drilled off course or simply gone too far. There are ways around such problems if indeed it is a problem and you won't know until you have removed the manifold and taken a close look.

There are repair epoxies and putties of various types intended to reclaim such errors and there are specialist cold stitching techniques which can reclaim almost anything made of metal. For areas that must be strong and are subjected to very high temperatures I drill and tap oversize and sometimes make a double diameter stud and sometimes I plug the oversized hole with a large bolt and machinery adhesive, cut off flush and re-drill and tap the original size.

if you have gone into the water jacket that is a problem
take the head off and use an thread insert in the hole
that brings it back to standard stud size
on reassembly use a quality thread sealer on the stud threads and tension correctly
leave it to set and do not retension head
there are many engines where the head studs go into the water jackets and all use a quality thread sealer during assembly

How do I fix a block that has pulled the threads out of the hole for the head bolts. This engine is a dual overhead cam out of a 2001 cadilac


3 things you can do here;

1 You can re-tap the hole one size larger and use a larger diameter bolt or stud. If you use this solution the component being bolted down will have to have a clearance hole drilled in it to take the larger diameter bolt or stud

2 If you're dealing with stripped stud hole you can re- tap the hole one size larger and use a" stepped " stud . One end is the larger thread the rest of the stud is the original diameter and thread.

3 The best solution, particularly if your dealing with a thread in an aluminium casting, is to fit a thread insert. These are sold under a range of names e.g Helicoil, Recoil, and come as a kit made up of a tap, a quantity of thread inserts and an insertion tool. Each kit only covers one thread size.

Yes some threads are tapped into water jackets, you can easily tell this by the condition of the threads on the pump bolts removed. Are you sure it's leaking at the pump and not around a thread boss itself? If you couldn't find a gasket, you could of made one, which i would of done---this engine has a cast iron block with alumn. cylinder heads. What kind of permatex did you use? If you use ONLY silicone and over-tighten---poof--it's gone, nothing there.

L had to drill out a bolt that broke.lt one of the bolts that hold the footpeg bracket on but when i drilled it out it made the hole bigger l try a bigger bolt and its a little to small


You need to get a 'Helicoil' or 'Time-sert' kit for that particular thread (diameter & pitch)
They come with a larger drill & tap + inserts
'Time-serts' by Wurth UK are the best but expensive for 1 thread (I know I have most popular sizes)

you most likely have broken studs in your cylinder heads. those studs hold the manifold to the head, buut after a while they will break and you have to extract them from the head. not something for novice to be doin, since you may have to be doing some drilling and tapping and if you drill in the wrong manner/way, you can drill into the water jacket, which will create a coolant leak, which can only be fixed by head replacement. i have doone dozens of those manifolds and drilled 100ts of studs.

Drilled hole in intake manifold at upper radiator outlet


Did the bolt break off flush with the top of the hole? or if you remove the cover is some bolt sticking up? if there is try and use vice grips to get ahold if the bolts if it is flush then drill the bolt out and re-tap the hole. Way cheaper and likely less work too...
