Question about 1993 Harley Davidson XLH Sportster 883

1 Answer

1993 XLH883 is drawing a small amount of power when the ignition is turned off. There aren't any accessories that can be used unless the ignition is on so I can't understand what could be drawing any amount of power (when the ignition is off). Testing was done by disconnecting the negative battery terminal and using a voltmeter on the positive. I'd appreciate any feedback. Thank you

On the '93 model which uses a standard mechanical switch with three connections on the back, the only thing that is not controlled by that switch is the voltage regulator. Disconnect the wire from the voltage regulator at the positive battery terminal and see if this stops you "switch off current draw". I think this current draw is typical as it's measured in the milliamp range. The current draw is so small that it wouldn't pull your battery down in a year provided your battery is good. If you're having a problem with your battery, the first thing to do is to take it to an automotive parts house and have it load tested. If the battery is over two years old, it may be bad. Heat and vibration is what gets to motorcycle batteries. I hope this helps,

Good Luck,
Steve

I installed this controller I a rv can I run the hot wire to the ing switch so when the key is off the controller is off

The ignition circuit should be left alone, nothing added. If something must be added to the ignition circuit then a relay would be prefered. The ignition circuit feeds power to the ignition system and any extra load added to it may cause undesired effects.
The accessories circuit is more adequate and even then, the amount of power the add on controller needs is a factor. To avoid overloading any existing circuit a relay should be used. The relay uses a small amount of control current on the solenoid to switch power contacts to added loads.
Bottom line is suggest the use of a relay. Control the relay thru accessories circuit and a fused power wire from the battery is switched for added loads.

Yea how about if when you turn the key it has power , but whn you turn to ignition everything goes dead ?

Turning the key to on causes current to flow to light power draws like the fuel pump, ignition, etc.
But turning the key to start, causes 10 times that amount of current to go to the starter.
So one possibility is that the battery is weak, the battery terminals are dirty, etc., and you just don't have enough current.
But another possibility is that the starter is drawing far more current than it should, from something like an internal short, a frozen engine, etc.

Tom tom goes off when ignition is turned on.....could it be an earth problem in the car.it works fine when the ignition is off

When the ignition is off its likely its drawing power from the tomtom battery - with the ignition on it may be getting a small amount of voltage from the car cigarette lighter to make it run from there, but not enough to power it properly.
I'd suggest replacing/seeing if you can borrow one of the car charger leads to see if that makes any difference. If not it may be in an issue with your cigarette lighter output in the car which can be checked by your local autoshop.
Hope this helps.

After reinstalling rear wheel assy on a 1988 harley sportster 883, it seems to close on one side

Look at the final drive belt. Sight along the belt as you sight a rifle. Does it look straight? If not, have you got any and all spacers in the correct location?

Go to this site, BikeBandit.com, for a drawing of the rear wheel and spacers for your bike. Search under OEM parts if this is not the correct picture.

Accessory connector that plugs into the ignition switchgets hot

It is an accessory output, but the main cause is mostly for the blower motor, sense it draws more amps than anything else,it is most likely the problem, repair the connector, and if it still gets hot, leave the blower off to see if this is the problem,if it does not get that hot, with the blower off, replace the blower,if it still gets off with the blower off, replace the ignition switch.

THE OVEN WILL NOT HEAT

How old is the unit? Sometimes the igniter can glow but if it isn't drawing the right amount of power to open the gas valve then that is the safety that is built into the oven... So unless the power requirement is meant gas valve will not light. Even though the hot surface igniter is glowing red hot. chances are the igniter is bad. Let me know what turns up. ken
