There are two brake light switches. One is in the right handlebar switch housing. This is front brake light switch and is a simple push button type switch actuated by the front brake lever.

The other switch is a pressure switch and it is located in a Tee usually somewhere under the bike near the rear of the transmission. Follow the metal tube coming out of the rear of the master cylinder. It will go back towards the rear brake. Somewhere in that line there will be a tee with the pressure switch in it. If you jumper across this switch, the brake light should work. If it does work when you do this but not work when you depress the rear brake signal, replace the rear brake light switch.

Good luck
Steve

Brake light switch

Hi Jake, always check fuses and bulbs first for broken filaments. Then check the connection at the rear fender wiring harness, inspect for corroded, broken or loose pins. Use a dab of dielectric grease and repair as necessary. Check your brake relay if you have one , check your brake light switches for continuity, some models rear turn signals were single filament bulbs only, no running light. If all else fails get out your test light and start tracking the power wire from the harness connection. For a free wiring diagram please visit the website below and good luck:

Underneath the center dash or seat there is the control module for the lights / speedo ensure that it did not come unplugged. Same problem happened to me on my 2004 Big Dog Pitbull which uses a very similiar module as your road king.

My back brake lights stay on my 2005 road king classic.

That will be either the front or rear switch sticking, first try unpluging the front brake light switch, with this disconected if the light stays on the problem is with the rear switch, locate the switch this will be close to the brake pedal normal spring opperated which can stick, check it is closing fully, you may also disconnect the switch and check the light goes out reconnect the front switch and check correct opperation, this would thenpoint the fault towards the rear switch

Why doesn't my brake lights work?

Possible that the brake light pressure switch is not activating or the activating switch on the pedal.
trace the voltage from the switch to confirm. also check the voltage at the lamp assembly - faulty rear lamp assembly or ground to the unit, fused lamp.

Parking light is on but the brake light won't come on. tried the bulb and the brake relay.

HI,
Did you check the brake switch and the bulb base terminal?
It looks like the bulb socket terminal is faulty and needs a thorough cleaning on the contact and ground.
Open your tail light again and remove the bulb, spray some WD40 in the socket, check the spring at the rear of the base contact point( might be stuck ). Over the years rust and oxidation usually accumulates in that area and needs only some cleaning maintenance.
Hope that solve your proble!

Thanks for using Fixya!

1999 Road King Brake lights will not come on

Sounds like you have a bad rear brake light switch, both front and rear brake lights work through this pressure switch.

Find the rear master cylinder and the metal brake line that comes out of it and goes under the bike towards the rear wheel. Follow this metal line until you come to a tee in the line. There is a pressure switch screwed into the line at the tee. Make sure the wires are plugged onto this switch. If they are and you still don't have a brake light, you may need a new pressure switch. Simply screw the old one out and the new in. Do not depress the rear brake pedal with the switch out.

Good Luck

Brake light don't work replaced all fuses, what do i do? 2005 Road King FLHR

If neither the front brake nor the rear brake will make the light come on, I would suspect the bulb if the fuses are not blown.
