Question about 2002 Yamaha TT-R 250

1 Answer

2006 TTR250. Bike will not idle unless choke is fully engaged. After a minute or less of this the head pipe (the one that comes right off the block, I don't know if I have the name right) becomes glowing red hot. It backfires an extreme amount (small jets of flame go out the exhaust pipe) makes a sort of hollow sucking sound one time after the engine is turned off. I have no idea what's going on, any ideas?

Two things you have to oberved. Choke is only applicable if you experience hard starting in the morning,If yes then use choke for a while till you got your motor idling stage.the glowing red hot indicates that your engine is flaming hot, this means your choke is steadily on.( never stay your choke steadily on.).Try to clean your carb , carb cleaner will do. even without dismantling your carb from the engine manifold.Rev your throttle and spray through the air intake, you'll notice a foul sound bcoz the cleaner is mixing with your gas,it's fine.also you'll notice a black smoke while doing a full rev. it's also fine , thats the carbon that need to push out from your carb. take it from there my friend ...let me know the result.observed your bike

I have exactly the same problem with my 97 model. It is an extremely low km bike that hasn't been ridden for a few years. Was wondering if just cleaning the carb was a good fix??

Changed oil clogged air filter with new after market air filter bike ran good until the third time I started it it would not idle unless it was choked

My Harley is very slow to warm up, it also does not like to idle without choke unless it is good and warm. It could be the clogged filter was acting like a choke, but ruining your gas mileage. Now with air flowing smoothly the engine needs a bit of choke to idle. It should not need choke once it is fully warmed up unless your idle speed is set too low. With the engine hot, check RPM if you have a tach. If too low, adjust the idle speed at the carburetor. I suggest you find the adjustment while the engine is cold.

Some gray smoke when starting, worse with choke on

That sounds normal. Dark smoke is excess fuel due to the choke. Could be that the carbs need cleaned.

What would cause the exhaust to glow red on a ttr230

Hi, Anonymous your motorcycle is a high-performance dirt bike designed to run flat out that being said if you are strolling down some scenic trail at a slow speed or letting the bike idle for a few minutes your header pipe will turn cherry red, why you ask? It is not a street bike, it is designed for competition and weight is a major factor all necessary components are of the smallest and lightest design necessary to maintain performance under extreme conditions ie. small radiator and inside frame oil reservoir that doesn't get cooled, the majority of your riding needs to be at high speed. My 2006 streetbob keeps miss firing when idleing and when I ride it changed plugs and wires and got a hd mechanic to analize it on a computer and still nothing. I took it to another shop and still they...

Don't let your bike just sit there idling. The choke circuit is needed for initial start-up.
If you leave the choke on, when it warms up a little, the choke circuit is putting to much fuel into the cylinders. The added fuel doesn't get fully ignited and just sits in the exhaust pipes. When you get on the throttle, the unburned fuel in the pipes gets ignited and explodes, causing the backfire.
Use the choke to get the bike running. You should be able to start riding after less than a 1/2 minute. And during that time the oil is well circulated to lube all internal parts.
As you're ridding, slowly turn the choke off in increments. As soon as the bike will idle on it's own, the choke should be off to prevent an over rich mixture and foul the plugs.
Plus you're well into your ride and have saved a little on gas mileage.

My bike keeps cutting out???

Do the following to see if these fix the problem, before messing with the hoses.
1) It could be that the idle jet in the carb is blocked. Check that out.
2)
It could be a blocked fuel breather. Check that out.
3) The choke migh'nt be stuck on. If the engine is working with the choke pulled on all the way, with high revs, it's possibly an idle problem. Readjust the idle setting.
4) Check to make sure the chamber is not flooding. If it is, adjust the valves.
5) Your single spark plug is sooted up and not sparking. Remove it and clean the head, and replace.

Choke won't open or close

I think your bike has a CV carb which doesn't have a choke. It's called an enrichener. Pulling out the "choke" knob merely dumps more gas into the carb. If the bike starts normally with the knob pulled out, you do not have a problem. On a cold/cool day, pull the knob out and start the bike. If it idles faster than normal the system is working. Pushing the knob in should drop the idle speed, maybe stalling the bike if it is not fully warmend up.
