Question about Honda VT 1100 C Shadow Motorcycles

1 Answer

What causes battery to be drained on 97 honda ACE 1100? seems it may be the starter switch on the handlebar but I am not sure that connection would drain the battery. The switch, over the past couple of years makes contact but sometimes does not and I have to hold it in until the contact is good and then the bike will turn over. I recently put in a new battery as the old one drained over winter. Now with a new battery, it ran fine for a bit, then all of the sudden died. Thought maybe I blew a fuse as ''nothing'' was happening, ni lights, no nothing. went to take the battery out and found the connection a tad loose as allof the sudden I had lights but not enough battery power to turn it over or start. Battery is on charger now.

When you start the bike, switch headlights on and accelerate. See if lights become sharper when you do. If not it is not charging in the first place and riding it drains it gradually. see if the lights are sharp when idling and go worse when cutting engine.

At this point sounds like just the loose connection to the battery. What you need to do is check with a volt meter to see if it is charging its a simple test if you have a volt ohm meter or just take it to your local shop depending where your battery is located it a very quick check to determine if you have a charging problem.
As for the handle bar switch start button there is some carbon built up on the contact use contact cleaner for this.
Otherwise looks like your good to go

There is one more fuse near the battery, check the starter switch on the handle bar if you have 12V coming in to the switch.

Nutral switch on honda shadow aero 1100

If there is a click when pushing the starter button first check the starter itself by checking for battery voltage at the starter cable when the click is heard. If there is voltage the starter is the problem. If there is silence when the starter button is pushed check for voltage at the small yellow/ red wire on the harness side of the connector for the starter relay. This relay can be found by following the positive battery cable to it. If there is voltage present when pushing the button the relay is most likely bad. If not the right hand handlebar switch may be bad. Hondas have a problem with melting the contacts in the starter button portion of this switch. Open up the switch and jump across the black to the yellow/red terminals on the starter button circuit board. If the starter spins this switch is bad.

When you turn the key do you hear a "click" from somewhere on the bike? You said you checked the battery, I assume you meant the connections and that it has 12.5V?

Bike wont start from hand controls and headlight wont turn on the bike will run but to start it i have to pop start it

If the battery is in good shape and fully charged - and the headlight fuse is not blown, then I suspect that the starter button is at fault. The starter button does two things when you press it: engages the electrical circuit that causes the starter relay to trip, and, at the same time, cuts power to the headlight.

It could be that the contacts inside the handlebar mounted starter button are dirty. You can try spraying some electrical contact cleaner in there - but you are likely going to have to replace the whole right side handlebar switch assembly.

My honda vt1100 c2 starting problem

If you can hear the starter run, but no motor turning, the starter clutch is going bad. It is what allows the motor to turn over with the starter, and it idles while the bike is running.
