Did you check oil level . what happens is the carb float sticks and dumps gas into the motor crank with the oil,(oil will smell like gas) to much oil = smoke.(rebuild carb change oil). IF this is a bad or weak motor use STP OIL treatment the thick stuff and use the whole can when you do your oil change . this will help you sneak a year or two more out of a bad motor

White smoke comes out when I pull the cord.

Did you notice this after the engine oil was changed. If you overfill oil it will smoke. Check oil level. Let me know if this helped. I have other ideas, but this is the most common problem with smoking.

My woods mow'n mach (1850) on an upward grade

There is a few things that I would check and might come to a solution to your issue follow this and will help diagnose your mower. Has this engine been over filled with oil?
Has the lawnmower been turned on its side to clean?
Has it ever been serviced because the carburettor diaphragm and air filter need to be changed on a yearly basis.

Lawnmower is spewing white smoke

white smoke means that there is water in the fuel air mixture during combustion. a bluish white smoke means oil is being burned during combustion. take another look and make sure which one it is. since all mowers ive seen are air cooled the only way water can be getting in the fuel air mixture is through the gas cap. check your gas tank and gas can for water. may be best to empty both and start over with fresh fuel

White smoke

the white smoke is oil - did you overfill the oil ? if you tipped the machine your air filter could be full also - if this is an old machine it could be ready to throw a rod but not enough info from you to tell
