If it is mechanical ... your cable is broken. If it is electronic ... you have a malfunctioning sensor.

How can you know? Look at the back ... is there a cable entering the device? Unscrew the thumb bolt and take a look.

Electronic? There will be a wire going inside. It could be loose.

03 corolla petrol revs up on its own when idling and then settles down again

R u start the car in cold morning or any cold condition? If so, it is normal revs up itself. Sometimes I see some cars revs up to 2000 rpm for 2 to 5 mins, then drop down to 1000 rpm.

on the side of the carbs you will find the throttle linkage and on one of them there should be a screw that touches the linkage and this is where you screw in or out to adjust the tickover ! get engine running and see the linkage move and then hold the revs at 1000 rpm with your remote control box then adjust the screw so it just touches the linkage , pull back the remote lever to neuteral position and the revs should stay at 1000 rpm , then turn screw back so the rpm is at 800 rpm and the engine should then rev up and down and return to 800 rpm ! always run engine with water turned on at the hose flush attachment or in a tub of water or lake etc ! RPM meter jumps and bobs up up and down when under 3000rpms, but its running fine, just the meter that is not working correctly.

yes rev counter has a problem,. remove rev counter from speedo cluster and take to instrument place to get circuit checked and rectified, give clear discription of symtoms under 3000rpm fluctuates etc.

Bike wont go past 10,000 rpms. power just shuts out.

These bikes have rev limiters to keep you from blowing the motor. they are supposed to do just that, shut power off if you rev the engine too hard. Usually it cuts out and re-starts very rapidly and you get sort of a Vroom, Vroom , Vroom sound that lets you know you are reving it too much. If you continue to push the motor it will shut power off. 10,000 rpm is a lot of rpm and this could cause major issues with the motor. you don't want a piston to come loose at this rpm!

I have a thunderace and the rev counter keeps jumping from 0 t0 7000 revs

7000 rpm is a self diagnostic code that either your exup valve is not being detected or the valve is locked up and not moving. If you put a header on your bike and took over the exup valve servo motor, you are going to have to put it back on. It also changes the mapping of the ECU and will not let it rev to redline when the Exup servo motor is missing.
