Question about 2004 Harley Davidson XL 1200 C Sportster Custom

1 Answer

The starter on my 04 hd sportster remains engadged after the engine starts.i've tried turning it off and on,letting it sit awhile.with the run button set on and then u turn the key to on the starter will automatically engage without pressing the start has been extremely windy blowing around sand but from what i see the starter is self contained so i don't think that could be a factor.

Tries to turn over then wont let it sit awhile then it starts

It could be starter heatsoak (starter gets hot from engine heat and needs to cool down first).
You can fix it by putting heat wrap on the starter.

I have 04 Sportster 883. My problem is: when I leave my HD in garage for more then 6 days, I have problems with starting it. I need alway two or maximum three times to turn engine on. The starter works....

This is pretty normal, it allows the pistons and cyclinders to warm as the superheated fuel atomizes behind the valves. lol. This is all technical **** for, your engine runs better when its warm, lol.

Also this allows the oil pressure to raise and send oil to the top end. I wouldnt worry about it. Harleys sometimes take longer to start as they sit, and all the components cool off. I would start beeing a little concerned if it is slow to start (like the battery is dieing) or when you do get it started and it idles for a while then cuts out. Though it is normal for an otherwise cold engine to stall at lower RPM.

Hope this helps

The engines turns vigorously when I press the Start button, but won't run. There is plenty of fuel, the spark plugs were renewed about 3,500 miles ago [when it was serviced by a n HD dealer]. I have...

If the starter turns the engine over, there's nothing wrong with the starter relay, the solenoid, or the starter. The reason your engine won't run is it has no spark for some reason. I'm afraid that this is all I can tell you. For some reason, the system is not firing the spark plugs. Check the fuse. I hope this helps but I must confess that I don't know a lot about Harley's new electronic system after 2000. I work on the older bike that don't have this system.

Good Luck

93 HD Sportster 1200 will not start!

Have you tried to bypass the starter button/switch? Use a heavy jumper wire to go between the starter terminal and the positive battery terminal. Turn the key to "On" position, make sure "Run/Off" switch is turn on. Make sure bike is in neutral. I've started guys bikes with coat hangers before when they lost had trouble with the starter button. If the bike starter turns over, you'll at least have a place to start looking for the issue. Also you said you checked the battery, what was the voltage?

Engine won't turn over

Sounds like a dead battery to me. Hook it up to a good charger not a battery tender.

Starter runs but does not engage.

If the starter motor is running, but not engadging the engine you have a faulty bendix drive, which is what makes the gear in the starter engadge to the flywheel, then retract after the starter has been disengadged. It may just be in the celenoid, which is the small round cyllender on the side of your starter that engadges the bendix. If you remove the starter and bring it to an autozone or advance auto they can test it for you to be sure for free. You will also need to bring the old starter to them as a core, so if you bring it to them before purchasing the new one, they can test it and the core charge will be paid for when you purchase the new one.
Good luck!
