Question about 2004 Yamaha Xv 250 Virago S

The lever for my back break will not return to its upright position after pressing the break. I think this may be due to the break cable. The pedal has lost its 'springyness' but when pressed the break still works the pedal just stays down. Can you give me some information to repair the problem? Thanks

There are four possibilities. From worst to easiest to fix: (don't worry, a link provided below has diagrams of all the parts in exploded view with part names)

1. There are two springs holding the brake shoes firmly against pivot post and brake lever cam, the ends of these can wear through and break. These provide most of the spring tension felt in a cable operated expanding shoe brake. Requires wheel removal and simple removal of brake hub to access.

2. The cam that expands the shoes (when rear lever is actuated) runs through a waterproofing rubber grommet. This grommet can often tear and bind up, reducing the return spring's effectiveness.

3. There is a spring behind the brake's foot pedal frame mount and the plate that pulls the front of the cable end. This maybe either dislodged or the angled ends broken off.

There is a compression spring at rear wheel end of cable, between cable stop and lever arm. This can be removed, stretched and replaced or packed with spacers to provide additional spring.

Several things the throttle cable breaking allowing the pedal uncontrolled movement or smashing into the football and stAying there or the pedal return spring not functioning due to poor lubrication also cable cabin be affected the same stiff and sticks in place or hard to return to the tick over idle engine

Don't know about needing the brake pedal pushed to get INTO park, but it might, as the pedal needs to be pressed to get it OUT of park.

BRAKE LIGHTS STAYS ON. the swith isnt the problem.


If the car thinks the brakes are on, then the switch on the brake pedal lever under the dash is bad. But this switch is not the only switch you have. IF your system works like the Ford products I am use to, then another interlock is present to prevent you shifting out of Park without pressing the brakes.

If you are able to shift without your foot on the brake, you are still getting a signal to the second interlock with the trans. This means the brake pedal switch is saying your foot is pressing the pedal. Some cars are in the data base for Autozone.com. If you can register your car for free, most will have free wiring diagrams and fusebox layouts.

You may have a relay for brake lights on a Mercedes. Other cars usually do not because it affects reliability. But a stuck brake relay could keep the light circuit on, if equipped.

A better scanner can do brake functions and all you need to do is plug in the tester to the ABS port and see if the abs is identifying a problem. The cheaper scanners do not have this feature.

A remote possibility is that you have a bad Master cylinder and the pedal is not returning to the full upright position.

Did you adjust the brake light switch correctly? To adjust the brake light switch, first press the brake pedal down a few inches, then pull the switch plunger rod out of the switch toward the brake pedal arm, as far as you can without using excessive force. Next, return the brake pedal to the pedal stop position against the pedal stop and pull the brake pedal toward the rear to push the brake light switch actuating plunger rod into the switch housing limited by the travel of the brake pedal arm rear travel stop position. This procedure automatically adjusts the brake light switch correctly.
If the brake lights still don't turn off with the brake pedal released, check the brake pedal arm for sticking or binding that is preventing the brake pedal arm from returning fully to the pedal stop when the brake is released.

Sounds like you need a good screw.(to hold the pedal on)
I assume you have replaced the brake pedal, and it is the brake light that is flashing not the tail light.
there should be small electrical brake switch that the pedal has to push to turn the light off, when the brake lever returns to its normal position, this switch is adjustable,
There is also the posibility of the switch being damaged when the pedal fell off.

Generally, a push button type switch is pushed on by the lever that the rubber pedal moves when stepped on. When the pedal is released the lever rests against the switch. The switch mount may be loose or out of adjustment or the switch may be faulty. If the switch is pushed in fully when the brake is released, then it is likely that the switch is faulty. It is also possible that due to corrosion or damage of some kind the lights are being powered due to a short of some sort. If the brake pedal is not fully returning to the up position when released there may be a return spring that pulls up on the pedal or the spring in the master cylinder is faulty.

the return spring ha broken you can try to adjust the outer cover but your going to have to remove the wheel to get to the brake spring. it is also possible the cable itself May be worn and sticking on the inside so you still need to pull it apart to see. also don't know if that models has the return spring on the pedal or not but see if it does and see if it is broke, hope this is helpful thanks for using fix-ya.

Gear shifter does NOT shwitch from park and break


SHIFTER LOCKED IN PLACE

  1. Remove the instrument panel cover below the steering column, then remove the steering column shrouds to gain access to the brake transmission shift interlock (BTSI) solenoid. The solenoid is part of the interlock cable assembly.
  2. Disconnect the wire connector from the rear of the BTSI solenoid.
  3. Insert the ignition key and turn it to the ON position.
  4. With the brakes applied, try moving the shifter out of the PARK position.
    • If the lever now moves freely in and out of PARK, perform the Circuit Test below.
    • If the shift lever still does not move from the PARK position, remove the BTSI solenoid from the shift lever assembly. If the shift lever now moves freely in and out of the park position, the BTSI solenoid is faulty and the interlock cable must be replaced. If the shift lever still does not move from the park position, the problem is in the shift lever assembly or the ignition interlock cassette

Ball nipple of cable (40B) Cable
Clip in and insert into holder.
Cable (40B)
Pull jacket in direction of arrow until lock lever (44B) rests against the cam (48).
Ball nipple of cable (40L)
Clip in and insert.
Cable (40L)
Pull jacket in direction of arrow until lock lever (44L) rests against cam (48) and tighten retaining bolt to 5 Nm .

NOTE: The cables are bolted to the steering lock and hooked onto the brake pedal operating lever. They are routed securely to the floor-mounted shift control without kinks.

Testing After Adjustment
Ignition key in position "1" and brake pedal depressed > or = 25 mm :
The locking levers (44B) and (44L) must disengage fully from the cam (48) so that the selector lever handle can be moved to position "N" without resistance. The parking lock is unlocked.
Brake pedal not depressed:
Move selector lever handle from position "N" to position "P" and turn ignition key to position "0": the locking levers (44B) and (44L) must engage in the cam (48). The parking lock is operative. Press on protective cap.
