Question about Honda CX 500 A Motorcycles

6 Answers

I was riding my bike down the road going about 20-25 with the clutch in going down a small hill and all the sudden the bike stopped running and hasn't started since. I pulled the stator hearing that the bike has a history of the stator crapping out but the guy at schucks assured me that if it were the stator it wouldnt cause the bike to die. If you have any suggestions I would be deeply appreciative!! btw I have a Honda 79' cx500 Custom

Hi, You can gave a bad ignition coil,plug wire or spark plug which I doubt since it just quit running so quickly

The problem points to something that had to quit instantly

On the engine is a POINT COVER. Under that is your points and condensor. If the condensor goes bad it will not produce spark for the points. A photo of the point cover can be seen on this web site so you know which one to remove.

Hi my name is Kenny

Your stator is there for charging the bike, however you need 12 volts to power the ignition, if you unit had a charging problem then as you ride you will be drawing off your battery until the point where the voltage will drop to a point where there isn't enough to power to supply the system voltage for the ignition system, answer to your question "if the stator is bad will it cause the bike to die" ? Yes it can f the there isn't enough voltage supply for the igniter.

Couple of things, I would removed the battery and charge it for a good 24 hours with about a 2 amp charger, then take the battery back to Schucks and have them load test it, you'll probably find if the bike has been sitting and the battery wasn't well maintained while it was stored then likely you battery is no good. If you have a volt meter you can check your charging by simply hooking your meter up to the fully charged battery and then starting the bike and measure the voltage across the battery, rev the bike up to about 3500 rpm's and you should see about 14.8 volts, that would indicate that your bike is charging properly, anything lower then 14 volts you will likely run into a problem.

Now you could have a fuel issue going on also causing it to die, but I think you need to start somewhere and I would start with making sure that I have a good battery.

Hope this helps !

Sorry but without testing the stater I have to disagree with your guy. The way to track this down is to start with the most obvious and most likely problem. Please try this and let me know. I am sure it is the stater and yes the Honda's are known for it from what I read here.

Best of i t and let me know something.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

It may not be the stator itself but within the same housing are the charging coils and pick-up coil needed by the CDI to produce spark.

Initially, electrical tests for 'no spark' condition (a multimeter & a testlight are required):

  • the black/white wire from the CDI should not read 0 or low resistance to ground;
  • when cranking, white & blue wires to CDI should have pulsating AC voltage;
  • when cranking, blue/white & orange/white to CDI should read very low pulsating AC voltage;
  • when cranking, sky blue, orange, red/yellow & blue/red wires to CDI should have pulsating AC voltage;
  • when cranking, yellow & pink wires to ignition coils should have pulsating AC voltage.

Good luck and thank you for asking FixYa.

It has to be the electronics ,either the crank sensor or the ignition module ,possibly even a coil or a loose wire ,but this is a awarkard question because i can throw a lot of things as to why it stopped but the first thing i would check is the fuel tank shut off ,check for fuel coming out of the tank and the rubber seal hasnt perished and blocked itself

I just bought a 2006 zx14 that will only start with the kickstand up and the clutch pulled in. The neutral light is on but if you put the stand down the bike shuts off.

Both the clutch and the kickstand are safety features to stop people crashing.If the stand is down and hits to road while you are riding.You crash.The clutch is to stop people starting the bike in gear and losing control if it starts.Hope this helps you

Ticking when cruising and not under load or going down hill

Not a lot of information to go on. I really need more. Is the sound coming from the engine, transmission, rear wheel, front wheel, or you just can't tell? Does it tick when going down the road with the clutch lever pulled in? While you have the clutch lever pulled in, turn the engine off and see if it goes away. Try different things in order to get a "change" in the noise. Once you find something that makes the noise change, then figure out why.

Now, you're ticking could be an exhaust leak somewhere. Look for black soot around the exhaust pipe joints. I could also be rock hung in your drive belt. Roll the bike and look on the inside of the belt for a small rock or something hung in it.

Burned smell coming inside the car(pathfinder 1998) while long journey.

Dear Sir,
As you said while driving burning smell comes, if it occur in this condition 1. at hill side road 2. you trying go up side on slope or 3. you are in traffic on slope. basically what happen due to over riding or you can say you are in 2nd or 3 rd gear and you moving towards up side you will press clutch half and press accelerator , that will cause clutch burning if having problem in pickup then get replace clutch kit assay,if you are not facing any problem with car pickup you can drive it till you feel problem in pickup. it will not stop suddenly it will give indication with pickup loss then go and replace it .till drive the car don't worry. Thanks

I have a broken spoke on the back wheel of my bike, and the wheel wobbles from side to side. Is it dangerous to ride up a steep hill, I need to get home, and am wondering if it would be best to walk it or...

This depends mostly on your weight. Yes, it's safer to walk, but if you are a small person, and you can ride the bike on a level surface (like a parking lot) without the wobble increasing, then try pedaling hard in the parking lot. If that works ok, then you can probably get by. Don't ride fast. Don't ride down a steep hill. If you have hand brakes, and your front brakes are good, then don't use the rear brakes. But don't go over the handle-bars by using the front brakes hard! If you are not a small person, then walk the bike. Good luck.

I have 04 crf 250 going up hill dose not shift easly.going down hill shift all gears. pulling clutch all the way in bike still goes foward

It's a clutch issue. Verify that the cable is adjusted, and that you don't have too much free play in the clutch lever. Watch the engine end of the clutch cable to see that it has full motion. If this looks good your problem may be internal. You could disconnect the cable from the engine end and ride it to see if it changes for the better.

First gear issues

last April my bike was in a crash. It went in for repair and has been unridden since then. (Because my injury prevented me from riding) A week and a half ago I put my bike on the road and have been doing some short rides. First gear is giving me grief. When I come to a stop it often won't go into first; or; it goes into first and then slips back into neutral; or; if I start in 1st let's say in a parking lot and I'm maneuvering slowly to get into position to exit the driveway it will suddenly be in neutral. I have been coming to a stop and put it into first and saw the light go dark; while I am sitting at the red light it will slip into neutral. Then.....sometimes I can't get it to go into first without a lot of effort. What do you think is the problem? Poorly adjusted from when the bike was in for repair?Which side did it go down on? Likely just a misadjusted clutch or shift lever. If not it could be worse then that... bent shift fork (yikes). Check your clutch lever freeplay and then your shiftshaft area for any signs of damage.,,,
