2003 toyota camry 4cyl.engine doesnt turn over but starter does.starter ck. and is ok , just makes starter whining noise

if starter motor runs (hear it??) but doesn't turn engine , then it needs to be replaced also at same time , the gear it contacts with on flywheel edge ,needs to be visually inspected (easy with starter removed) for any missing or bent teeth , as a engine this old is bound to have some worn or missing teeth, if gear is missing teeth or are very worn (teeth looks like a shark fin with hook to them) then engine and transmission will need to be separated to be replace the gear , most shops will just remove engine to allow for this , but this isn't always nessacary

Is there some sort of relay for the starter gear to catch on flywheel?

On top of your starter is a "solenoid", which does two jobs:
1. it's the starter relay,
and
2. it engages the pinion gear on the starter with the flywheel.
There is a "bendix spring" that retracts the gear when you stop cranking. The gear can get stuck on the shaft, and the starter will just spin....

I have a 1983 harley sporster ironhead that pops out of 2nd gear when down shifting. What needs to be replaced??

Hi Sam, and the usual suspects are:
1. Shifter rod improperly adjusted.
2. Shifter drum improperly spaced or damaged.
3. Shifter engaging parts badly worn and rounded.
4. Shifter forks bent.
5. Damaged gears.
Good luck and have nice day.

The bike won't start I've had the starter checked out and they said its fine, checked teeth on the inside where the starter touches and it spins free the way the starter would move it. should the start...

Hi, Not_so_peach the starter drive/Bendix/clutch is a mechanical gear driven component that engages the clutch pack ring gear to turn over the engine. It has an internal mechanism that allows the gear to turn in one direction and once the engine starts allows the drive gear to free spin. If gear free spins in both directions then the drive gear has failed, it is not serviceable and needs to be replaced.
