That transmission is one that has been used for years in Dodge and Plymouth vans. Do you know when the last time was that the fluid was flushed out and replaced? It's pretty important that it be done every 90K miles.......have it checked out.
Your tranny may be gummed up. There are ball bearings inside it that move to cover different holes. One or more is probably stuck. Try some trans sealer and conditioner or a flush, just follow the directions on the label. They are about $6 to $20 at parts stores.
The coggs between the gears are worn, no simple fix. you just cant get on it very hard. And if you do it will strip out 2nd gear. In order to remove and replace the worn out gear you have to remove the engine from the bike, take off the upper half and split the case. and if youre going to go through all this trouble you might as well rebuild the whole engine. So I had a Vmax that 2nd and 3rd gear went out on me, (my heavy right hand and all) I could still ride it. the gas mpg was bad reving 1st till about 20 mph then skipping to 4th. But hey I put over 40k with it acting this way before I sold her and purchased anouther... Enjoy your beast and she will take good care of you
It was a design flaw, it was repaired in the late 90's. In the earlier Max's there was issues with the shift segment as well. But unlike the gears, you can replace it with an updated segment without pulling your engine and get it done in an afternoon.
Normally the problem would be a bent shift fork and that may indeed be the problem. The shift fork is a part of the gearbox and works by sliding a gear with "dogs", (pins), left and right on a shaft so that it engages with another gear. If a fork gets bent it will travel left & right as normal but since the slider gear is out of position due to the bend the gears don't mesh properly, i.e. the slider gear doesnt quite reach far enough into 2nd gear for the two gears to mesh fully. This is not a repair for the novice.
