How to drain engine crankcase oil 2004 1200 sportster

Run the bike to get it to normal operating temperature. Put an thin oil pan on the ground under the center of the engine. Look for the little rubber hose coming from the bottom of the bike with a plastic plug in it and held in the hose with a clamp. Loosen the clamp and save to reuse if it is the screw type. Then pull the plug out and open up the oil fill cap on right side by the seat.

Hi Anonymous, it runs from the bottom of the oil tank to a clmp on the frame, remove it and the worm clamp that holds the plug and drain away, make sure you do these just after a ride so oil is nice and hot. Have nice day.

Want to know how to change oil on my sportster

Ride the bike and warn the engine and oil up. Find the oil drain plug. Usually, it's hose large hose that is plugged onto a lug on the frame and has a clamp on it. They moved this lug around seems like every year in that time frame and I can't remember each year. Once you've located the drain hose, pull it off and drain the oil tank. What you doing that, remove and replace the oil filter. This can be particulary messy as the filter is on it's side and oil will run everywhere when you loosen the filter. Oil the gasket of the new filter, screw it on until it makes contact, and then go another 3/4 to 1 full turn. Reconnect the drain hose to it's lug and fill oil tank with three quarts of 20W50 Harley Davidson Syn3 oil and any oil of this viscosity that has a API rating of "CG" for use in diesel engines petroleum based or synthetic. Good Luck, Steve

Where is the oil plug on a 2001 harley davidson 1200 sportster .i want to drain oil and put new oil

There is a hose between the down tubes at he rear of the frame that looks is attached to the frame, it looks like it is sending fluid into the frame. It isn't, it is a nibble to attach the drain line to.

2004 1200 XLR WHERES OIL PLUG AND TRANS PLUG

Damon, on the bottom the drain hose has a plug. Remove the plug to drain ENGINE oil. When done draining (takes a long time as it drains slowly), put the plug back in and add oil to the oil tank on right side of the bike (don't forget to change the oil filter too). Transmission/chaincase/clutch oil is drained by removing the plug from the bottom of the tranny case. Adding tranny oil is done through the clutch inspection cover or chain inspection cover on the left side of the bike using a funnel with a hose attached (sold in aoutoparts stores everywhere). Tranny oil and engine oil are not the same! I would use Sportrans or HD tranny oil for that instead of 20W50 in the tranny. Add no more than 28 oz. If you add the whole quart (32 oz) you will have hard time finding neutral as the case will be over-filled. If you take the clutch inspection cover (a.k.a. derby cover) off, make sure the bike is not leaning on the kick stand but is upright or the proper amount of oil in the tranny will spill out. I put a brick under the kick stand and it centers the bike pretty well.

Good luck!

Hi Aubrey,
I use Dextron II in my FLHR Road King and its never missed a beat, however your local spares stockist should stock aftermarket oil NOT H.D. (Mortgage price) which does the same.
