Question about 1981 Yamaha XJ 650

1 Answer

I took the ignition off and put the wires together to get it to spark and it did, but then i tried to compression start it and now there is no spark, what do i need to do? did i fry the electronic circuit and if i did, what will it take to get the juice back? I know the battery is good and i looked at the wiring and everything seems to be in order but im not 100% because i dont have a manuel to troubleshoot the wiring.

Engine Cranks But Will Not Start Basic Checks:
A. Test Fuses. Test both under hood power distribution center and the fuse panel under dash. This is done with a test light tool. The test light should illuminate on both sides of the fuse, if not the fuse has failed and needs to be replaced.

B. Testing Fuel Pressure Test for proper fuel pressure with a test gauge on the fuel rail, most throttle body injection cars (TBI) are between 13 psi and 17 psi. and most (DPI) direct port inject systems are between 40 psi and 55 psi. If no or little fuel pressure is observed and there is 12 volt power present the fuel pump, the fuel pump needs replacing.

C. Checking Timing Belt Test for compression by removing a spark plug and insert a compression gauge. Crank the engine over about 5 seconds the gauge should read between 125 psi and 165 psi, if no compression is observed remove front engine cover to inspect timing belt or chain. Crank engine to observe cam rotation, if the cam does not rotate the timing belt or chain has failed. (note: if the timing belt drives the water pump it is best to replace the water pump at this time)

D. Test for Injector Pulse Remove injector connector to insert injector test light (node) or volt meter. Observe light flash or gauge pulse while cranking. If light/voltmeter doesn't respond, an ignition distributor/crank angle sensor (CKS) or an ignition module is most likely your problem.

E. Test for Ignition Spark Remove spark plug wire, insert an extra spark plug into end of wire, rest spark plug next to a ground source then crank engine. You should observe a blue spark between the spark plug gap and ground source. If no spark is observed, an ignition coil, ignition rotor or spark plug wires might have failed. (always keep hands away from engine when cranking)

Tim,
I would look at three main things first. Compression, spark and fuel. Once in awhile us mechanics can get a "hunch" of what's wrong but overlook some common problems. I would invest in a compression tester and a spark tester. Both are fairly cheap and available at any parts store. Simply unscrew spark plug and srew in compression tester and turn starter over. Observe the reading, do this for all cylinders. Then put plugs back in and install spark tester. Turn starter over and observe spark. If you can get your bike started again, check compresiion and spark when your unit fails. This should put you in the right direction. Hope this helps!

Solo 445 weak spark

I had the same problem.. First I was only getting 89 psi so I took it apart just to find out that the piston ring was half way stuck in the piston groove making it loose compression put it back together and it started. But it was starting sometimes and I almost gave up on it till I noticed that the cruise throttle needed to be at least half way up to start and now it starts all the time just have to make sure is half way up before starting... If you try starting it with the throttle down it will give you a little bit of a hard time starting it when you put it half way up.. You have to start it half way up right off the back

try a new spark plug. if u fowl out a plug some time they will not fire under compression.2 strokes need. fuel, fire and air, very simple engines.it is possible crank seal are bad .that doesn't allow the engine to create vacuum in the crank case.thus fuel and air will not make it to combustion chamber.

Husqvarna 51 died and wont restart

hi
if you have a good compression,a strong enough blue spark and carburetion for the fuel air mixture try priming the engine(put small amount of gas in the spark plug hole)then start the engine. If the engine runs only the gas you put inside the cilinder there is a carburetion problem to find and fix.
let me know regards savumihai71

Poulan leaf blower won't start

I had spark and compression. It was definately a fuel delivery problem as the primer bulb was not filling with fuel. I tried taking off the carb spraying it with cleaner, blowing compressed air through the fuel lines and removing the fuel filter.

Finally I took the top of the carb off (the two screws holding the primer bulb on). I sprayed the ports with carb cleaner and used compressed air to blow through the fuel inlet and outlet.

When I put it back together, the bulb filled with fuel on the first prime, and the engine fired up on the first pull. The throttle response is also much snappier than it has ever been.

I'm not a mechanic, but it worked for me. Hopefully it will help someone else.
