Rust in the tank not a big problem, there is a product called Kreem you can buy the kit comes with bottle of rust remover and bottle of dryer and a bottle of internal sealer/coating.

If the bike restarts after a stall by-all means check the fuel system if not it could be the stator failing and killing the battery.

Testimonial: "thanks...I appreciate your feedback. I am going by the previous owners testimony as to why the bike stalls after being driven a little while. I actually have not driven the bike very far. the stator has been considered and I am going to test it with a meter. definitely excellent advice."

I think you've gotta split the engine to get at it on those old kwakkers, it's a fairly big job.

What are the Valve lash spec's for a 1985 Kawasaki ZL900 Eliminator?

"Valve Clearance (when cold)" "Inlet: 0.13-0.18 mm" and that "Exhaust : 0.18-0.23 mm".
Careful when doing the valves .
on some bikes it changes the valve timing?
i'd be contacting your bike shop and ask.
Good luck...........

The fuel pump does not have to be cleaned, just run some clean gas through it. Hopefully the filter caught the majority of the rust as it is "upstream" of your fuel pump.

You only have about 2-3 psi from the fuel pump.

It has 2 possible solutions 1) fuel sending unit is going bad which the tank has to be dropped to change, 2) you have a bad cluster panel. Hope this helps

Hi, Big 9 and the usual suspects are:
1. Fuel tank empty.
2. The fuel tank has old dead gas.
3. Fuel tank bottom contaminated with ethanol sludge, dirt, water, rust, etc.
4. Fuel supply valve/petcock turned off.
5. Fouled spark plugs.
6. Engine flooded as a result of overuse of the enrichner.
7. Vacuum hose to the fuel supply valve/petcock disconnected, broken, cracked, or pinched.
8. Fuel valve/petcock or filter clogged.
9. Fuel line to carburetor or throttle body pinched, kinked or blocked.
10. Carburetor float stuck.
11. Fuel injectors clogged.
12. A severely discharged or damaged battery, you need 12.5 volts or better and be able to pass a load test if necessary.
13. Check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
14. Loose or corroded wire connection at the coil or plug between ignition sensor and ECM module.
15. Spark plug cables in bad condition and shorting check for spark leakage in the dark, cable connections loose, or connected to the wrong cylinders.
16. Ignition timing incorrect due to a faulty ignition coil, ignition module or MAP, CMP, CKP, O2, TPS, ETP, IAC sensors.
17. Faulty neutral, clutch lever, or kickstand safety switch.
18. Faulty fuel pump or fuse or relay.
19. A stuck bent or burnt valve.
20. Tilt sensor needs a reset.
21. Security system not disarming alarm needs a reset.
22. Check for engine trouble codes.

Zl900 eliminator starts and runs good. when i put it into gear (with the side stand up)the motor shuts down.

Hi
It sounds like the side-stand switch is not working - check for continuity across it & for any bad contacts or broken / crushed wiring also
