Question about 1987 kawasaki GPZ 500 S - GPX 500 R

My kawasaki gpz 600r cuts out when i try to move off in first gear. Is the some sort of safety cut out making it do this? it starts fine and runs fine but will not move.

It sounds like the kick stand switch is not working or working real good. Did you mess with the switch? Or did you buy it like that? Somebody messed with and did it wrong. When the kick stand is down, the bike goes in gear it shuts off, That is how it is supposed to work. Mine was wired up and you would not believe how many times I took off with the stand down and almost killed myself. I got a new bike and left the switch alone. I know they make special switches for the wires to be cut and relocated, I don't know if you can find one on ebay or not, but I would get under there and check to see if any wires are hanging down. Hope this helps.

Hi, Ishmael the ignition circuit cut-off system comprising of the side stand switch, clutch switch and neutral switch has the following functions:
a. It prevents starting when the transmission is in gear and the side stand is up, but the clutch lever is not pulled.
b. It prevents starting when the transmission is in gear and the clutch lever is pulled, but the side stand is still down.
c. It cuts the running engine when the transmission is in gear and the side stand is moved down.
Periodically check the operation of the ignition circuit cut-off system according to the following tests.
With the engine turned off:
1. Move the side stand down.
2. Make sure that the engine stop switch is set to "RUN"
3. Turn the key to "ON".
4. Shift the transmission into the neutral position.
5. Push the start switch if the engine does not start the neutral switch may be faulty.
With the engine still running:
6. Move the side stand up.
7. Keep the clutch lever pulled.
8. Shift the transmission into gear.

Hi, H650, working fine, then erratically just stop, seems electrical problem, side stand switch were suspicious, took it off and bridged the wires, the same problem, Thx

Engine cuts out dead when warm then starts again when cold


Hi, John you may have a faulty ignition coil the following applies to carbureted also fuel injected models and the usual suspects are:
1. Severely discharged or a damaged battery, 9 volts or lower.
2. Failed alternator/generator and or voltage regulator.
3. Loose or corroded battery terminals and or cables especially the "NEGATIVE" cable, look for loose, corroded, or broken connectors inside the cable harness at "BOTH" ends.
4. Failed main circuit breaker or ignition switch, check for loose connections and continuity.
5. Failed system and or ignition relay, check for continuity.
6. Failed ignition coil, ignition/electronic module.
7. Failed CKP, CPS, CMP, MAP, TPS, or BAS sensor, corroded, loose or broken wire connector pins/sockets.
8. Throttle cables and or idle speed improperly adjusted hot idle speed should be 950 RPM to 1000 RPM.
9. Air/fuel mixture ***** improperly adjusted.
10. Water or dirt in the fuel system, carburetor or filter.
11. Restricted, blocked or kinked fuel line.
12. Fuel tank empty.
13. Gas cap is not venting properly or fuel tank venting system blocked.
14. A failed fuel pump, pressure regulator and or fuel injectors.
15. Vacuum line from intake manifold to petcock broken, cracked, or not attached, carburetor vent line plugged.
16. Needle and seat stuck closed in the float bowl.

My bike starts with kick stand down-safety feature malfunctioning / i unplug the kickstand switch connected the end of the plug with a wire so that i have closed circuit and the problem still exists even...

I have a gpx600 1989 and my sidestand switch is


To lose the switches job, cut the 2 wires and twist them together, this will complete the circuit and the bike will think the kick stand is up, I did this, and do you know how many times I took off with the kick stand down??? Lots!! They make a kit that will fix this, it will start with the kickstand down, but kill the engine if it is put in gear.

Running well at high revs would indicate that all the fuel and air it needs are getting to the engine and you also have a good spark. Probably no problem with air and fuel filter ( if fitted) or sparkplugs.

Running hot, and bad idling are signs of a lean air fuel mixture. The engine is probably not getting enough fuel at low revs.

This could be caused by an air leak between the carburettors and the engine. Check that the vacuum line to the fuel tap is properly secured at both ends. It is behind the fuel line at the tap.

Get a a short length of hollow plastic tube and use it like a stethascope - put one end to your ear and move the other end around your carburettor mounts with your engine revs as low as you can get, and listen for any sucking noises that would indicate a leak. Look for cracks in the rubber inlets.

The other possibility is that there is an internal blockage in the idling jets or idling fuel circuit. This is where dirt tends to lodge because the jet dimensions and passageways are very fine - The high speed jets are much bigger and dirt often just passes straight through.

Try a little bit of choke while the engine is warm to see if you get a stronger low speed response. If so that would point to an internal blockage.
