Your Night Train has hydraulic tappets in it that keeps everything tight as the engine warms up. If you're getting excessive noise from the top end, you may have wear on the rocker shaft bushings. How many miles does the engine have on it? Are you running the right weight oil, 20W50? If the noise gets really loud, you have probably lost a roller on the end of the tappet. The bike has roller tappets in it.

I am running 20w50 oil in the bike. it has 20,000 miles on it. I have had the 20,000 mile inspection done on it and they didnt mention anything bout it then. I just started noticing the noise recently have all service records for the bike since day one.

I just had the cam support plate, cams, cam chain tentsioners replaced. doesnt have 2200 miles on it since then. the oil pump and pushrods were also replaced with SE adjustable time saver pushrods and a SE high flow oilpump when the cam support plate was replaced. It maintains great oil pressure cold and at normal operating temp. bike has same power as before doesnt smoke or anything. oil has 2200 miles on it since it was changed.

It sounds like you might have some wear in the rocker arm bushings and the shafts. This is a bit unusual for 22K miles but I have heard them have a slight ticking noise before. It's not anything to really worry about unless it really loud. If this is the case, you can pull the rocker plates off and have the bushings replaced. This is not something that I would consider a "user replaceable part". The old bushings must be pressed out, the new ones pressed in, and then reamed to size on the new shafts. This is a job for a properly equipped shop.

Now, to save money, you can pull the rocker plates off and reinstall them yourself. It's not difficult to do, you just need decent torque wrench so that you don't strip a bolt.

You ever had the top end serviced? How many miles on it? Maybe time for a valve job, check pushrods, and lifters. How many miles on the oil?

I have a 2002 HD Heritage Softail Classic with an intermitent growling noise in the lower front end of the motor. It is louder when the engine is cold. The noise disapates when riding. Had all the fluids...

I don't work on the Twin Cam engines but I'll take a guess on this one. Your Softail is equipped with the Twin Cam 88-B engine. The engine is a counterbalanced engine that is different from the standard TC88 engine. The counterbalancer is located in the lower front of the engine cases. Go to this site to see what it looks like and where it's located. http://www.bikebandit.com/2002-harley-davidson-softail-heritage-classic-flstci/o/m11509#sch608106 This may be where your problem is located. Keep in mind that I'm not a Twin Cam mechanic. I work on the Evolution and earlier engines and I'm not very familiar with the TC88-B engine but if the mechanics are stumped, I can't do any worse.

Good Luck
Steve

Bike has developed a humming type of noise around the front cylender that radiates through the frame, running boards and can be heard around the front mudguard

The 2000 Softail was the first year of the TC88B engine. This is the counterbalanced 88 cu. in. twin cam engine, first year. Since the noise is coming from the front of the engine, I would suspect that it has something to do with the front counterbalance. There is another at the rear of the engine case by what I'm told. They are driven by a single row chain in the cam chest. I would suspect something to do with this system. Wished I could be of more help but I don't work on the Twin Cam engines. I work on the Evo and earlier engines, the Italian Harleys, and the "Hummers". Good luck!
