Could have an air leak in the carb boots or bad air fuel mixture. check the spark plugs, if they're black system is too rich. if they're white, they're lean. either have an air leak going to the cars or just need adjusting. also inspect your air filter.

Hi, Anonymous and the usual suspects are:
1. Damaged or restricted fuel tank venting system.
2. Loose float bowl screws.
3. Damaged float bowl o-ring.
4. improper fuel level in the float bowl.
5. Worn or dirty inlet valve or seat.
6. Damaged or leaking float assembly.
7. Particle contamination in inlet fitting cavity.

My xj900f has a nasty backfire from the carbs and the exhaust. And it does in all throttle positions. I replaceced ecu cleaned. Tank carbs ect please help at wits end

The problem is either, too lean a fuel mixutre, ign timing module is loose, or damaged plug leads/plugs or the intake is drawing secondary air from a loose / bad gasket in the intake manifold or carb leakage. Also perform a leakdown test to confirm valves are sealing. I assume the valve adjustments have been checked also?
