No big deal just take off the tank after u get the gas out most of it anyway and there it is... try to pull or just use something to pry it out if its hard. to get the new one in well it could just go right in but it wont/!@&%# so just take off the cover and slide the gears on or u could do this from the start and give a good tap to get it out dont rip the gasket go slow no problem u can do it... and alot more

Not that hard at all two main bolts a couple of wires one of them from the battery, so you might want to disconnect the battery before you attempt this and then pull it out and install in reverse.

oh shoot im sorry, i thought you meant starter. the" stator "is tricky.. you need a special puller to get it off . i was given one once, but still does me no good without shop air to zap it with..i don't even know what i did with it, but i think they run about $40 to $50 dollars. and you would probably have to special order it, or find a nice mechanic that'll let you borrow one.

Why is the 3 prong plug from the stater to the regulator melting

Probably corrosion/high resistance in the connector pins and sockets. When cleaned/repaired coat with dielectric grease.

Where do i start charging system not working 1978 suz gs1000

Start by checking the stater output from there the voltage regulator output.
stater voltage is ac. and should be 3 yellow wires going to the voltage regulator.
This voltage will hurt you!
It is a good start

Battery went dead & I replaced battery with a new battery, wont hold a charge. Is the stater bad?

If the battery is good, but the bike is not charging, it is either the stator or the regulator/rectifier. If you confirm that the stator is good (resistance and output check) then the regulator/rectifier is the problem.
