To replace the steering head bearings, you should do both the top, and bottom ones. It's quiet a big job, but very simple. first support the bike so the front wheel is well of the ground,, then remove the brake callipers,, then remove the front mudgaurd,, then the wheel,, the fork clamps need to be loosened, so you can remove each fork leg,, then you are left with what is called the 'tripple tree'. Loosen the bolt on the top, and mabey a clamp bolt as well. Then the bottom of the tripple tree will come out the bottom. You may have to undo a few more things, like speedo and tacho wires and such. Just take your time, watch how it all comes apart. Your new bearings will be a sealed unit, and easy to put in. As for your other problem, im not sure? sounds like your headlight is draining power. Check voltage output at battery with headlight on, and engine running at idle. Voltage should be about 12.5 to 14 volts. Could be battery problem, or charging system problem. Hope this helps.

Hey John,
The unit you are talking about is called an "intermediate shaft". I am intimately familiar with these..(I worked as a inspector over the departments that made the parts and then assembly- we made them for NUMEROUS manufacturers!!)
It has a small universal joint on each end.. the u-joint has bearings on all four corners, just like a drive shaft u-joint...the bearings are "staked" in and are almost impossible to get out without destroying the yoke(s)..replacing the I-Shaft is the most economical route... I WOULD NOT attempt to rebuild one!!
Rebuilding them is a painstaking, expensive(even if you can get the parts), and usually you end up breaking something..
The I-Shaft has a flat spring in the sliding joint to regulate the sliding stiffness when the body/engine/cab "flexes".. -- DO NOT separate the two pieces.. the rag coupling (the one at the bottom) is swedged (staked) in place so the shaft assembly will not separate in everyday driving..
.replacing the I-Shaft is the most economical route... I WOULD NOT attempt to rebuild one!!

Yes it is a low oil sensor / switch. It could be faulty, but it can be bypassed by disconnecting it. I would check all of your wire connections from your stator to your ignition switch..

It is a 5 speed manual transmission? If it is noisey in all gears except for 4th, then the problem is countershaft bearings.
