SOURCE: 04 fxsti 88b motor check oil while bike is on

You need to check oil while bike is upright on a level surface. I believe from 05' and earlier the MOCO designed their softail dip sticks to read the level while the bike is on the jiffy stand.

If oil is hot,it should be at the full mark. If checking cold, it is about 1/4 inch below the full mark.

Is the Motor and transmission oil together, or is it separate? Do i need to drain both to do an oil change? should i check the oil level on kickstand, or upright? Thanks

Engine and transmission/gearbox oil is on and the same, so there is one drain plug, one oil filter and one place to fill it all back up. The oil level is always checked with the bike upright and level.

My transmission on my 2001 flhrci suddenly started leaking. don't notice leakage when bike is upright

Clean all oil from the bike exterior. Leave it sitting in an upright position for a period of time. This may require a bike lift or other such device. Then look for leak source. Make sure oil level is not too high. When changing oil it often gets on the cross member and may leak when on the jiffy satnd for a while until it is all gone from this area. Make sure to always use thread sealant and a good o-ring on the drain plug.

I have an 05 flstsc,do i have to stand my bike up,or on kickstand to check oil in primary and trans?

bike needs to be upright to get a true reading of oil levels, have someone sit on it with their feet flat on the floor while you check the levels.

How do you cheak the oil on a 1997 1100 virago

Motorcycles generally use one of three methods to check oil level.

1. A "sight glass" or small window which will allow you to see the oil level. (it should be at the mid point of the sight glass. Check it with the bike upright and not leaning on the kickstand.

2. The fill plug may have a short dipstick attached to it just like a car would. Again check it with the bike upright.

3. If no other method is used, then open the fill plug and fill until the oil level just reaches the lowest part of the fill hole without spilling out. Once again do this with the bike in the upright position.

Check to make sure the rubber O-ring is in good condition and is properly seated on the fill plug while you are at it!

On fxst 2005 do you check the oil level in tramission when on its kickstand or upright

Always check the transmission oil with the bike upright. The transmission holds 20-24 ounces of H-D Syn3 20W50 oil or H-D synthetic trans lube.
