More than likely the starter relay, it could also be connection problems in the starter circuit. I would test them before going after the starter or solenoid.

The clicking may be the starter solenoid. Check for a dead battery or defective solenoid.

I own a 2005 bonneville 790. Its was dumped on its left side and now it just clicks at the relay. I can jump the solenoid and it starts and runs just fine so I dont think it would be the starter and...

Hey J.. make sure your battery has the necessary CCA..(Cold Cranking Amps).. this is the true measure of a battery.. and you have replaced the starter solenoid..?.. hhhmm...??
... Still sounds more like the battery is low on CCA.. ....bypassing/jumping the solenoid allows the engine to start with having/needing the amperage necessary to make the solenoid contacts activate... Amperage is what "pushes" the voltage.. without the required amperage (CCA).. voltage, when relating to starting your bike is "just voltage".. it will run a light, but NOT start a motorcycle...Good luck.

Hi my bike was on my stand i started and accidently put the bike into first gear and it sytaled right away..and now its not turning over wen i try and start it, it makes a clicking sound but wont turn...

The bike must be in neutral when the kickstand is down or it will shut down. Its a safety feature.

Put the bike in neutral and it should fire right up.

If you can't get it out of gear, sit on the bike, put the kickstand up, pull the clutch in turn the key on and hit the start button, and it should fire right up.Make sure on/off button is on too.

If you tried that and it still clicks, check battery voltage, a low battery makes the solenoid click.
Make sure you have a clean battery terminals and tight terminals.
Check battery voltage. Most auto parts places will load test them for free.

If battery is good and it is in neutral and it still clicks, then the starter solenoid is bad.
replace the solenoid. And your bike should fire right up

I try to start my bike and it just clicks, it used to turn on with no problem but doesnt anymore thought was battery but charged it and still just clicks

Well, the first question is, where is the clicking from. second, check all the connections from the batterie to starter, and to the ground. sounds to me like a bad starter or poor connection somewhere. was the bike laid down? The starter switch should be fine because it is activating the solenoid, or so it seems.

I have a 1983 HD FLT that wont turn over !

Those old Shovels are difficult to start sometimes. But, never make the assumption that a battery is good. Take it to an automotive parts house and have them check the battery. There is usually no charge for this service. If the battery is in NEW, has it been charged and does it have sufficient cold cranking amperage (CCA) to do the job. It takes at least 250 CCA for that bike with it 80 cubic inch engine. If you live in a very cold climate and you're running 60 weight oil in the engine, you need an even stronger battery.

Next, are all the connections good? Not only the connections to the battery but also the ones to the solenoid, starter, and the frame ground.

If everything I've mentioned here checks out and still makes that clicking sound, it could be several things. Where is the clicking sound coming from, the solenoid or somewhere else? If it's coming from the solenoid, the contacts in the solenoid could be burned. Disconnect the battery and all the connections on the back of the solenoid. One each screw terminal on the solenoid, there's a nut. Take these off as well. There are two screws left, take them out and carefully pull the black end cap off of the solenoid. Now look at the two bolt type connections that are made of copper. One or both of them may be badly burned and recessed. Notice the washer on the plunger inside of the solenoid. Does it look burned. If one of the bolts is badly burned with a recess that matches the edge of the plunger washer, you can turn it around 180° and reuse the bolt. If everything looks good, carefully reassemble the solenoid. If you try to tighten any of the nuts or the two screws, you can bust the phonelic cap rendering the solenoid useless. You can buy a solenoid repair kit if needed.

If the click is not coming from the solenoid, try to locate exactly where it is coming from. There is a starter relay that is usually located somewhere around the battery that will make a clicking noise. It's one of the plastic cube type about an inch cube. If this is making the click but not starting the bike, you need to use a test light on the small terminal of the solenoid. When the relay clicks, you should get power to the small terminal of the starter solenoid.

To test the solenoid, first make sure the bike is out of gear. Take an old screwdriver or something, on the back of the starter solenoid, jumper between the large terminal that the cable from the battery connects and the small terminal. When you do this, the starter should turn the engine over. If it does, your problem is before the solenoid and the starter. If it doesn't turn the engine over, it's either the battery, solenoid, or the starter.

Yamaha big bear 400 will not start wilth electric started will start fine with pull start has comp, fuel and spark

Sounds like a problem with the starter, could be a starter fuse, relay or solenoid. The start cicuit wiring could also be damaged. If you can pull-start the motor, and it runs fine, you have pretty much eliminated any problems with the motor. Check the wires running from the start button make sure they are intact, also trace them and look for around a 1" cubed black box. This is the relay, when you push the button, if its working, you will feel the box click. Also locate the starter and do the same thing. If you feel or hear the starter click, the solenoid is working. The battery voltage could also be too low to energize the starter motor. Could also be a battery or alternator issue. Check the battery voltage and for any sounds coming from the bike when you push the start button.

No power when I try to start bike, just a click…

Check the battery connections. Remove, clean and reinstall them. You probably had them off doing the wiring and they aren't making a good connection now. Always remove the negative first and install it last.

Biek wont start just clicking?

I drive the bike every day or two and it always starts immediately. Does this sound like a starter or solenoid or something else? Well tried to jump start the bike and it wouldn't start just the same clicking sound. Also tried to jump over the solenoid with a screwdriver and nothing happened. Then I tried to push start the bike and again nothing. I can tell the battery is weak but even push starting, I should be able to start it without a battery right? ,,,
