Question about 1996 Yamaha YZF 600 R thunder cat
I race my old 87 cbr f1 and i thought about rejetting but i found out that by just turning the factory set pilot screw another quarter turn i believe counter clockwise made a hell of a difference. usually these are capped off so people cant mess with the settings, so i just took out my carb bank and took off the bowls and reset them and where i race is 2200 feet higher than where i live and boy that made a big difference and especially when i installed a Barnet racing clutch and installed stiffer springs..actually i only purchased the friction plates soaked them in oil over night.. the old ones were burnt from all my quick starts off the line and it caused me to accidentally go way over the red line two notches coming down the straight away at willow springs. After the clutch/spring change and pilot adjustment, i was always put on pole position, even though i didnt deserve it, because when the green flag went down i was usually in the third or fourth row back and would just sling shot all the way through everyone to the front everytime, but since its and old bike and doesnt have the top end, the other bikes eventually catch up in the straight aways. i have a sonicore exhaust and its basically a straight pipe, the baffle is shot and needs replacing but there is absolutely no flow restriction through this engine. I've even beat my friends 1000 gxsr off the line and after doing it all day he said...boy you'd make an excellant dragstrip racer. This bike is awesome! the only bike that i've never beatin off the line was an R-1, he had me by a bike lenght. so if you want to go fast adjust pilot screws, install the best exhaust system they make, and install a racing clutch/springs...when you first install a racing clutch it"ll want to creep..you'll know what im talking about if you decide to do this...this is perfectly normal...the bikes clutch along with the stiffer springs is like trying to keep a bit bull from trying to attack someone it s ready to go!
