Question about 2003 Suzuki VZ 800 Marauder

Bike has been sitting for a year and wont start.Already drained bad gas and filled it back up. engine tries to start but wont kick over. Any suggestions?

Your carbs need to be cleaned old fuel tends to gum up your low speed jet.

Bike bein sitting for a year and half and wont start now


Well if it has been sitting, check your main things ie: you have a good or new battery, all your fuses are intact,make sure you drain all the old gas out of the bike and try to clean the carbs with some carb cleaner. It sounds like if it is not a bad battery then your gas has turned bad on you in which case it wont start until you clean it all out and put fresh gas in it.Also make sure you clean the spark plugs and check for spark.Good luck.

yes buddy drain tank put fresh fuel in and kick it over a few turns to allow fresh fuel to flow into engine get back to me if still no start

Wont start


ALWAYS have a fire extinguisher on hand when working on carburetors.
Remove the water trap bowl at the bottom of the petcock, (gas valve). Is there any water or trash in the bowl? Drain a cup of gas from the tank. Is there any water or trash in the cup? Dump it, clean it and re-mount it, ( not all bikes have a water trap bowl ).

Drain the carburetor. There should be a screw on the lower side or bottom of the carb float bowl. Remove the screw then replace it after the fuel drains. Turn the gas back on and wait a minute for the carb to fill with gas. Install a new stock NGK spark plug and try to start the engine. If the bike doesn't start and run properly then shut off the gas and remove the carburetor from the engine.

Remove the float bowl and clean the entire carb with a spray carb cleaner from the auto parts store. Wear protective goggles to avoid getting spray in your eyes. Spray into all the little airways and fittings in the carb. Remove the idle screw and the air screw on the outside throat of the
carb and spray into the screw holes as well.

Be sure to put these two screws back in the same hole they came out of. IMPORTANT > do not tighten these two adjusters down. Only screw these in until they LIGHTLY seat. Now turn each adjuster one and one half turns outward. Put the rest of the
carb back together, clean the air filter and install the carb. Let the float bowl fill then start the engine.

There is a proper way to start the engine. Four controls are on your bike to assist in starting.
  • The choke, used when the engine is cold. Pull the red knob for choke.
  • The " Hot Start " Lever, used when the engine is hot. Pull the lever to lean the fuel mix when the engine has been running.
  • The de-compression lever, always used.
  • The throttle, used to prime the cylinder.
Don't kick, instead, push the kick lever downward. You will feel the back pressure as the piston is going upward on the compression stroke to the point the pressure is great enough that the kick lever "locks up". You are very close to TDC. NOW, pull in the de-compression lever. Push the kick lever a little bit more to get the piston past TDC. Now release the de-compression lever. Give the throttle a 1/4 turn then let it snap closed. A diaphragm in the carb gives a shot of gas when this is done. DO NOT do this multiple times because you will flood the engine. Leave the throttle closed when kicking. A flooded engine will often backfire. Now give a strong kick through the full sweep of the kick start lever. Quickly get your foot off the kick lever at the end of the kick to avoid any chance of "kickback" from the kick lever. This happens in the case of a misfire, aka > backfire. It can be very painful, and can even break a leg. I am serious about that. Repeat the process (but without the throttle priming), until the bike starts. A good battery, a clean spark plug, a clean carb and clean air filter will also aid in starting.

Your carb is gummed up from old fuel. ALWAYS have a fire extinguisher on hand when working on carburetors.

Dump it, clean it and re-mount it, ( not all bikes have a water trap bowl ). Your gas tank should be removed , dumped and flushed out. Install an in-line fuel filter. After sitting for 24 years the crank bearings may be in bad shape. Remove the left case cover and lift the flywheel up and down and left and right. The flywheel should be rock solid with no movement at all.
This shows a 1983 carb. Yours will be very similar.

Hi the problem i have is my tt600r kicksback really hard all the time when i start it eventually it ticks over but wont rev up when i try to rev it it just starts banging and dies also it sripped three...


I am going to have you do a couple of things. Since the bike is a single cylinder, I believe it it is not fuel injected. This is a good thing. I can't find a service manual so I will be a bit generic in the folowing.

Turn the gas back on and wait a minute for the carb to fill with gas. Install a new stock NGK spark plug and try to start the engine per instructions below. If the bike doesn't start and run properly then shut off the gas and remove the carburetor from the engine.

Remove the float bowl and clean the entire carb with a spray carb cleaner from the auto parts store. Wear protective goggles to avoid getting spray in your eyes. Spray into all the little airways and fittings in the carb. Remove the idle screw and the air screw on the outside throat of the
carb and spray into the screw holes as well.

Now turn each adjuster one and one half turns outward. Before putting the slide back in the throat of the carb, move the clip on the jet needle one notch lower. Put the rest of the
carb back together, clean the air filter and install the carb. Let the float bowl fill then start the engine. This process should get you back on the road.

Proper kick starting methods

Turn the gas back on and wait a minute for the carb to fill with gas. Install a new stock NGK spark plug and try to start the engine. If the bike doesn't start and run properly then shut off the gas and remove the carburetor from the engine.

Started and ran for about 20 min now it wont start changed plug no change


  • Got gas and is it turned on? Clean air filter?
  • Have a buddy kick the starter while you look for spark.
  • Assuming no spark, how good is your battery? Are the fuses good? Kill switch on or shorted to the bars or elsewhere? Side stand kill switch gone bad?
  • carb, head and intake manifold mounted tight?
  • Have the dealer check the CDI, coil etc.
  • Remove the water trap bowl at the bottom of the petcock, (gas valve). Is there any water or trash in the bowl? Drain a cup of gas from the tank. Is there any water or trash in the cup? Dump it, clean it and re-mount it, ( not all bikes have a water trap bowl ).
  • Drain the carburetor. There should be a screw on the lower side of the carb float bowl. Remove the screw then replace it after the fuel drains. Turn the gas back on and wait a minute for the carb to fill with gas. Try to start the engine. If the bike doesn't start and run properly then shut off the gas and remove the carburetor from the engine.

Bike wont start after sitting for 6 months


Hi, first of all, open the bowl drains and drain all the old gas out of the four bowls. Tighten up the screws, find the main fuel line coming out of the fuel petcock on the gas tank. Pull this line off, and find a little funnel, or make one with a piece of paper or something. Slowly fill this line up until full, this will fill all the carbs up. Put the line back on, fire the bike up, let it run for awhile, should be ok. Your bike has a vacuum operated petcock, so it won't let gas thru unless there is vacuum to it, and it doesn't make much vacuum cranking over. I have took the vacuum line off of the petcock, and sucked on it long enough to get gas to get the bike fired up, but a vacuum pump would be better! lol
