Does it get hotter if you just let it run without driving?
The thermostat you put in, did you make sure to put the solid copper side into the engine block and not the other way around?
Are you running water alone, or have you a proper coolant mixture?
Is the electric fan running all the time?
It could be that the battery is dead. If this isnt a diesel you can pull the postive cable off the battery while the engine is running and if it dies it isnt charging. If it continues to run the battery is bad. There are other ways to check but this is a quick and easy way. If you are working on a newer vehicle this isnt recommened because of the jolt the computer could take.
put unit in defrost should have a slotted plastic screw most times near thermostat turn untill you hear fan shut off if your unit isnt going into defrost regurally control may be bad also for lots of ice/ defrosting a couple of times is necessary
Is the fan running or do you have an electric fan? If fan isnt running or never comes on no matter what you do it will never run much cooler. If fan is good then you could flush the radiator a couple of times and that will help but if fan isnt working it wont last long
