Question about 2002 Harley Davidson FXD Dyna Super Glide

1 Answer

I am not sure if you remember my posting, Custom Harley, my son played with the fuel mixture screw and idle. I have a question for you. I have the bike now and I have not had the time, but without the choke it turns over, now with the choke on it stays on but as soon as I take it off it shuts down, now for the past 2 weeks every day, I come in and tweek the screw a little bit more...but I just cannot get it to stay on. Too far blows gasses from the carb, too much the other way I notice the black smoke from the exhaust but haven't gotten it to the point to stay on. Is there anything that you can recommend to me? Anything you can offer I would really appreciate it. Thank you, Ignacio Montero

If your carb is a stock Keihen CV, with the large flat top on it, the idle mixture adjustment screw should be sealed unless someone has taken the "anti-tamper" plug out. The idle mixture screw is on the bottom of the carb behind the float bowl. Kind of difficult to get to. But, if this is the type carb you have, turn the screw inwards carefully until it stops. Do not apply a lot of pressure to the screw. Now back the screw out about 3 1/4 turns. This is a good starting point for this carb. After warmup, adjust for highest smoothest idle.

If you carb is an S&S Super "E". The idle mixture screw is the large screw right in the center top of the carb body. Turn it in until it gently seats and back out 1 full turn. This is the starting point. Allow the engine to warm up and adjust for highest smoothest idle.

Set the idle speed with the idle stop screw at 1000 RPM's or so. Don't idle it too low. It is typical for the enricher to turn itself off when you first take off. When you come to a stop and the engine is not to full operating temp, it may stall. You can carefully tighten the choke cable by turning the knurled portion of the cable right behind the pull knob. Do not overtighten as it breaks easily. Never lubricate the choke cable. Let me know if this works.

Good Luck
Steve

What is the adjustment screw under the throttle?

Hi Darren, on the right hand side of the carburator there is an idle adjusting screw with a spring behind it, turn screw clockwise to increase idle counter clockwise to decrease idle. At the front of the carburetor on the bottom of the venturi bore there is also an air/fuel mixture screw inside a carb body lug that may or may not be plugged with an aluminum cap that's about 3/16" thick. This cap can be drilled out to acess the air/fuel mixture screw. Turning screw clockwise will lean out mixture and lower idle, turning screw counter clockwise will richen mixture and raise idle. Start by turning gently the screw clockwise until it just barley bottoms out then back it out 1 3/4 turns. You need to balance the two adjusting screws to obtain an idle of 950-1000 RPM then back out air/fuel mixture screw 1/8 turn, snap throttle to confirm responce, you may continue to back out air/fuel mixture screw untill desired throttle responce is achieved, if you see black smoke coming out of exhaust you have gone to far and need to turn screw back in 1/8 turn at a time, final adjustment should be made with the engine at normal operating temperature. The idle might be a little lean.
If it's a carb (your model year offered both carb OR fuel injection), richen up the idle mixture screw a touch and see if that helps.

If not, check for an air leak at intake manifold, both where the carb attaches to manifold, and where manifold attaches to cylinder head.
An air leak will lean out the mixture.

No sweat. Screw the idle mixture screw in until it "bottoms out". Do not tighten or you will damage the screw. Back the idle mixture screw out about three turns. Install carburator and check for proper operation.
When you get the bike running, allow it to warm up and then adjust the mixture for highest smoothest idle. Set idle speed to about 1000 rpm with the throttle stop screw.
