Question about 1998 Suzuki GSX-R 750 W
Have a 1992 gixxer 750 with slingshot carbs. Started and warmed up bike last night for about 20 minutes with no problems. Went out today to start it and it wants to turn over "poof, poof" but all it does is make loud backfiring noises out the exhaust. I have already cleaned my carbs and there is plenty of fuel getting to the carbs. I checked my spark and I do have spark to all four plugs. I checked the plugs and three are wet and one was dry. Whats the problem?
Hi, Angelarny and the usual suspects are:
1. Severely discharged or a damaged battery should have 12.5 volts or more and be able to pass a proper "LOAD" test if necessary, you may have a preliminary reading of 12.5 volts or more but little or zero amperage the battery is faulty and must be replaced, AGM batteries fail in this scenario more so than lead acid batteries.
2. Check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
3. Faulty main circuit breaker and or connections.
4. Faulty ignition coil and or connections.
5. Faulty spark plug, oil or gas fouled, wrong heat range or service type, wrong gap, loose in the cylinder head, broken electrode or insulator.
6. Faulty spark plug cables, leaking or broken, internal damage check for spark leakage in the dark.
7. Faulty ignition module, switch, CKP, MAP, CMP, sensor and or any connector in the ignition circuit could have corroded, loose, or broken pins/sockets
8. Burnt exhaust valve or air leak in the exhaust system.
9. Cam sprocket loose and has jumped a couple of teeth.
10. Loose or worn out cam chain or tensioner.

The slingshot does NOT have a fuel pump. It is gravity feed through a petcock. Make sure that the petcock is set to the ON position. Its under the tank on the side.
If your bike has K&N filters on the carbs make sure you cover them with a plastic back before you wash next time.plus you will have to wash them and re-oil them before you put them back on. Dont use super high pressure washer to wash your bike. A garden hose will do.
If it has the stock air filter you might have gotten water into the carboration system with that high pressure washer you used. You'll need to disassemble the airfilter unit and either remove your carbs to take off the float bowls and get the water out or try to drain your float bowls while the carbs are still on the bike. Siphon out all the old gas if you think you got water in it or you will have to do this all over again. Sounds like you intoduce water into the system to me.
1. Got good gas?
2. Got spark?
3. Got oxygen?
4. Got rid of water in the system? = Should start.

best way to do this is to take spark plugs out individually and check for smell and sight of fuel. if it is getting fuel but not sparking then you will have a wet sparkplug. if it is dry look at the colour of the hook at the bottom of the plugs. brown plugs means running too rich, grey plugs means average burning and working well. black plugs is very bad and must be serviced. if all this not working the other test you can try but dont spill any petrol before you do this. if while you have plug out(only one at a tim or yuoll loose where wot leasd went to where) plugging it into the cable and holding with a very insulated pair of pliers, then try to turn bike over(start) whilst looking at the hook bit on the plug. if you see a bright spark from the plug then you will prob find they firing in the worng order. this could be a problem and should be dealt with by a dealer.

I have seen this before a few things to do too make sure. First take the air filter out and shine a light use your fingers to move the slides up and down I suspect the springs that go on the slide is not seated in center you can tell from the slide going halfway and hanging up. Next, the boots on the slides only go on 1 way there is a notch on the carbs for them. I would guess this would fix you up if not we can get deeper into it with air-fuel mix screw settings.good luck

Your charger should be putting out 13.0-14.5 volts to keep the battery charged. Otherwise its running off the stator sometimes and the battery at other times depleating the battery. The voltage regulator could be bad or the stator could be bad. try swapping the volt regulator first and start from there. Also a battery that has been depleted should be sufficiently recharged before using it again.

Yes, the boots may well be the problem. The cracks can let raw air into the intake which leans the air/fuel mix. This makes the engine run hotter. Carbon build up on the head and pistons can get red hot and on the cylinder(s) involved, can ignite the incoming fuel shortly after the intake valve opens. To lessen the problem, replace the boots, burn only premium gas w/o ethanol, and install a set of spark plugs that are one heat range colder than the stock plugs.
