Most likely you have either got a second flasher - please call the dealer with your vin number and he will tell you where it is - it is not working - or - -you have a loose ground on one bulb - which is very unlikely.
Best of it

Did you replace the stock turn signals with LEDs?

If so you probably need a "Load Equalizer"

Turn signals wont work on 1997 sportster 1200

Hi Anonymous, always check fuses and bulbs first, you could have a faulty turn signal module or a bad turn signal button/switch, remove it from the switch housing and check for continuity, check your wiring and connections from the turn signal switch to the turn signal module with a testlite. Make sure all wires are not worn or pinched and connector pins are not corroded, broken, or loose. For a free wiring diagram please visit the website below:

Sounds like you lost your ignition for some reason. Now, as to what exactly happened, I have no idea. I have seen people accidently hit the "run/stop" switch while riding. You might want to check the connections on your coil, as well as the connector from the electronic pickup on the right side of the engine. Look under the bike on the right side near the frame tube. There is a wire that comes out of the right engine cover below the round "points cover". Follow the wire back until you come to a round plug. If you can, disconnect the plug and check for corrosion. Put a bit of "bulb grease" (that white stuff they put on a turn signal or brake light bulb) on the connectors inside the plug and replug it.

On the left side of your bike there is a triangluar plate, Remove the plate and you'll find the ignition "black box" under it. Check all connections and look for chaffed wires.

I hope this helps. Good Luck!

I know it's a long link, but just highlight it, copy it and paste it into your browser. It's worth it.

I've owned, built, worked on, raced, did endurance trials, plus on Sporties from 883 to 100 to 1200, so let me know if this helped.

I have 2000 xlh sportster 1200 the bike idles fine runs fine but will shut off when oil guage reaches a little over 150 degrees any ideas

It sounds electrical and as it's a Sporty, I suggest a temperature-related dry joint opening up in the wiring. One popular candidate would be the earthing strap. It's worth checking continuity with a VOM when engine is hot. It may have a vibration crack. 66C is quite cool for a sportster oil temperature, so I guess you have this problem on every long ride? Good Luck.
