No, Harley's are broken down between Big Twins, and Sportsters.

Two different breeds.

Big twin would be the bigger HD motor, eg, 1340cc, motor with seperate gearbox.

How does the nut go on the clutch basket?

It depends on WHAT bike you're talking about!

If it's a Harley Big Twin (NOT a Sportster), then yes, the clutch pack nut IS a LEFT-HAND THREAD.

How much oil does the primary hold

It depends on the bike but gernerally it's a quart of oil whether it's a Sportster or Big Twin. On the big twins, it's acutally 36-44 ounces. Stand the bike straight up and remove the derby cover, drain the primary, and refill until the oil comes to the bottom to the outer clutch drum, the aluminum right around the outside edge of the clutch assembly. Do not overfill with either model bike as the clutch will drag making it impossible to find neutral with the engine running.

Where is the alternator on 883 sportster xl

It depends on what year model the Sportster is. Harley went to an alternator on the Sportster in late 1984. It was behind the clutch assembly with the outer clutch drum acting as the rotor. It stayed this way up until 1991 when they moved the stator and rotor up to the front of the engine like a Big Twin. It is now in the primary and driven off the engine sprocket shaft.

The sportster did not come with a Big Twin 86" motor it came with the Sportster Ironhead & Evo motors. The sizes where; Ironhead 900cc, 1000cc & Evo 883cc & 1200cc. Still I would try the link I gave you it should help.

How do you get the clutch plates off a 2001 1200 sportster. i can't get the nut to come off

To get the clutch plates out of the Sportster clutch assembly, you do not have the take the nut off. But, to answer that question, the nut has left handed threads on it. To change the clutch plates, you must have a special tool to compress the clutch spring so that you can get the lock ring off the inner clutch hub so you can remove the spring and the plates. The tool is available from JP Cycles for about $50. There is a "lockring seat" just behind the lockring. Make sure you look at the direction this ring faces before you remove it.

Need to see where an alternator/genorator for a harley goes

Well, it depends on the year and model of the Harley. On the earlier Harley, both the Big Twins and the Sportsters, the generator was located externally on the lower front of the engine. In 1970, the Big Twins went to an alternator. It was and still is located in the forward end of the primary cover on the engines sprocket shaft. The Sportster didn't got to the alternator until late 1984. From that year to 1990, the alternator was behind the outer clutch basket at the rear of the primary. In 1991 to present, the alternator is located in the same place as it is on the Big Twin models, in the forward end of the primary case. I hope this helps.

Level for primary oil required

Well, if depends on which model bike you're talking about, a Big Twin or a Sportster. On the Sportster, simply pour in a quart. Some Sportsters have an "oil level drain hole". A plug either on lower front part of the outer primary or on the rear end of the primary. Take the plug out, fill until oil just starts to run out and stop.

On the Big Twins, remove the derby cover, stand the bike straight up, and fill until the oil level just barely touches the lowest part of the clutch spring. The spring is a round spring that is usually darker in color than the surrounding aluminum clutch drum. Do not overfill as this will make your clutch drag and you will not be able to get your bike into neutral with the engine running. Depending on year and model the primary will take anywhere between 36-44 ounces of oil.

The Startermotor turns the ring gear but does not turn the motor over unless the clutch basket is pushed in slightly.

This has to be on a Sportster because you can't engage the starter on a big twin with the outer primary off unless you have a special device to allow for it. The torque will destroy the unsupported jackshaft.

On your bike, the ring gear is more or less pressed onto the outer clutch hub. I've seen this before. Now, you can either buy a new outer clutch hub or you can have your old one "repaired". We weld the ring gear to the steel part of the outer clutch basket. But, it must be done in such a manner as to not throw the basket out of balance. Also you must grind the weld down so that it does not hit the engine cases when reinstalled.

Need to know what type fluid goes in clutch housing cover on 79 sportster 1000

Harley-Davidson Sport Trans fluid or equilivant. Now, there are several aftermarket makers of this oil. It is different from the oil used in the Big Twin clutch cover because in the Big Twin, the oil only lubricates the chain and the clutch. In a Sportster, the oil also is the transmission lubricant so it has to have the proper shear resistance and high pressure lubricant additives in it. Custom Chrome, V-Twin, Motor Factory, and many others make this lubricant. Order it through your motorcycle shop.
