Either way too lean, or air intake leak, or the cam timing is out.
Does it help with the choke on?

Not certain of the timing on that model, but at top dead centre there should be some marks on the cam sprockets that will line up with the rocker gasket surface. The previous owner may have changed the timing by a tooth or two to try for more performance .

I have a 2003 yamaha big bear and it starts but backfires and sputers. We adjusted the valves and cleaned the carb and the problem stoped but then did the same thing.

I would change the spark plug this is probably not the problem but I have had them look alright but give me some of the same issues. To me it sounds like a carb issue. If it starts and idles but won't run good at higher rpm's then it could be the main jet getting clogged or the float bowl sticking and not letting enough fuel in. You may need to add a fuel filter to the line. You may want to check your timing also.

Cherry red exhaust and back firing through carb

sounds like your ignition timing is too far advanced allowing the petrol / air mix to part ignite in exhaust.

Raptor 660 2003 choke on bike idles good but when off the bike starts to back fire

Your bike is running too lean. If you have not made any changes to the air intake or exhaust then your pilot jet may have something blocking it. (probably a piece of dirt, or just tarnish build up of fuel if the carbs aren't drained while in storage) By turning the choke on, you are reducing the ammount of air allowed into the "Fuel / Air" Mixture. This allows the bike to idle properly. Once the choke is off, the mixture has too much air and not enough fuel causing the backfire. If you haven't changed anything like the exhaust or air filter it sounds like a good carb cleaning is in order. Otherwise, you will need to change jet sizes to accomodate the difference in air flow.

Try checking the switch for your parking brake. It is the top wire in the clutch handle boot. This wire connects to your CDI box, and restricts the RPM's while the parking brake is engauged. To find out for sure, trace the wire down to the plug under the headlight assembly and disconnect it. Now try starting you machine and give it some throttle!

hello
with the cylinder set at top dead center compression. using a feeler gauge between the tappets and the valves there should be .002-.003in clearance on the intake valves, and .006-.007in. clearance on the exhaust valves. thank you.
