A clunck noise changing gear

Hi,

I have a 2010 rocket 111 roadster with 500 miles, and since I bought it, it has had a cluncking noise when changing from 1st to 2nd gear and from 2nd to 3rd. From 3rd to 4th and 4th to 5th smooth as silk and same on way down also some times the gear change is difficult besides the noise. Have brought it back to dealer and tells me that Triumph say that this is because everything on the roadster is big and when I get over 1500 miles the gears will mesh better and the noise will go. The bike is under warranty but I get the feeling that someone is "yanking" my chain or is this true!!!

Hi
This does sound like a gearbox problem, either where the cogs lock together (the dogs go into recesses) or the shift forks themselves
The dogs do wear after high mileage which can make them slip out of gear
Ive never heard of a gearbox smoothing out over such low mileage, but I suppose it is just possible
You could get the gearbox 'blueprinted' (i.e. to manufacturers exact specifications) but this will cost a bomb !
Your best bet is to complain again & at least get a ride on another rocket3, or get it sorted under warranty

Ride safe

The Rocket III--with a base a base MSRP of $14,999--weighed 704 lbs. with gas and produced 140 bhp at 6,000 rpm and 147 foot-lbs. of torque at 2,500 rpm. The Touring edition had an MSRP starting at $16,999 that increased to $17,299 and had two-tone paint. The Classic edition had an MSRP of $15,699 and focused around "laid-back" ergonomics, as stated by Triumph, and had identical performance as the Rocket III.
2009 Models
  • The same models from 2008 carried over into 2009. The Rocket III, Touring edition and Classic edition also have the same performance specifications as the 2008 models respectively.
2010 Models
  • The Rocket III Roadster edition released for the first time in 2010. Triumph labeled it by saying, "[The] Roadster moves out of pure cruiser territory and transcends into that of the ultimate muscle street fighter." The Roadster is available in metallic or matte black. MSRP for the Roadster is $13,999. Powered by a 2294cc inline three-cylinder motor, which produces 146 bhp at 5,750 rpm and 163 foot-lbs. of torque at 2,750cc, the Roadster brakes with Nissan four-piston fixed calipers equipped with a Nissan anti-lock braking system (ABS) to the front and Brembo two-piston floating caliper with Nissan ABS to the rear. Filled with gas, the 2010 Roadster weighs 807 lbs.
For those interested in touring, the 2010 Rocket Touring edition comes standard with a headlight, luggage rack, adjustable passenger backrest, adjustable highway peg mounts, Roadster windscreen, auxiliary lamps, quick release sissy bar and aesthetic upgrades like drilled oval mirrors. MSRP for the Touring edition is $16,999 or $17,299, with two-tone paint. The Touring edition does not come standard with an anti-lock braking system. Weighing 869 lbs. filled with fuel, the Touring edition produces 105 bhp at 6,000 rpm and 150 foot-lbs of torque at 2,000 rpm.

I have same problem with my 2005 with 65,000 miles---think it is down shift between 2nd & 1st gear making noise. I read on ford 500 forum
that the dealership reprogrammed the transmission---but not sure how this works.
I welcome any advise.
