Smokin out of the number 3 cyclinder and the bike has set for a few years could that be a stuck valve?

Do a compression test on that #3 cylinder, that is the best way to tell.

Changing spark plugs will not affect compression unless you put in the wrong reach plug and it hit and damaged a piston. Sounds more like stuck valves, bent pushrods, broken rockers, or cam drive problems.

Virago blowing out through air filter

Will, let me tell you the "Old school" way to fix this.(1) Remove all of the spark plugs. (2) Disconnect the fuel lines. (3) Pour light weight oil directly into the heads.(I know, sounds weird) (4) Crank Crank Crank Crank. Until the engine turns smoothly. If the valves were stuck, this should cure it! (5) Blow the oil out by the compression of the engine cranking. (6) Pour alcalhol into the cylindars to clean the oil out of the top of the pistons.(Starting fluid also works well) (7) Again, Blow it out using the compression of the engine. (8) Put everything back together and fire it up! NOTE!!!! Any time you know you are going to store anything with an internal combustion engine, treat the engine in the same way, by pouring oil into, and onto the pistons directly. This prevents seize ups, and helps to preserve oil seals. ^^

Hey I have a 1985 rm 250 and its been siting for about 3 months with all fuilds removed ....I have cleaned the carb and other areas on the bike ......but when I reset up the cluch it is stuck ingaged and...

a clutch sticking on after storage is not unusual. i find that if i put the bike in 2nd gear, pull the clutch lever in and rock the bike back and forth quite hard a few times that the clutch will free off. just make sure that the ingintion is turned off, or the lead is removed from the spark plug, to make sure that the bike cannot start. this has never failed me yet, and some of the bikes i have done this with were stored for quite a number of years. hope this helps

Older models have the build date and model on the steering head even a 73 will have the build date and the VIN and the country it's built in. not knowing what era your bikes in all *** bikes have the CC of the engine on the front of the block under the fins near the base of the cyclinder 249 cc, 348cc 174 cc 123cc, 99cc, 49cc If you tell me what cyclinders it has does it have an extenal oil tank does it have numbers anywhere like YM1 YDS3 . An AS1 would be a 100cc twin 2 stroke with an extenal oil tank and upsweeped pipes.

Might be a bad intake valve spring or sticking valve on #3 cylinder. Not likely to be ignition timing problem as it would affect all cylinders. You might try an oil additive that is designed to free up rings and valves, but if it doesn't help, time to go inside the head. Good luck!

Stuck in gear

The bike has a bent shift fork. This means the engine comes out and must be totally torn down to fix the bad fork. The top end comes apart, the flywheel, electrics, shift shaft, clutch, main drive gear, kick starter, shift drum index wheel assembly all come apart then the gearbox gets split open for access to the shift drum and forks. This is not a job for the home mechanic. You have a few more problems I had best mention.

Most bike shops will not repair a bike more than 10 years old. Your bike is almost 40 years old. At today's repair rates it would cost around $500 to $600 for a shop to do the repair. That is probably more than the bike is worth. I searched the web and found a source for the original Honda shift forks. In round numbers they are $40 each. You should only need one fork. There is so much that should be done, all new bearings and seals, piston and rings, valve guide seals, and valves re-seated. Getting a gasket set could be a problem also. If I personally had the bike and it was really clean and nice, I would fix it up. But bear in mind, I have the tools and know how to do it in just a few hours and all it would cost me is the cost of parts. Paying the shop charges is the killer here.

My royal star 1996 is burning oil on # 3 cyclinder

What is the compression on the cylinder compared to the other cylinders? It should be within 10%. Some causes can be - as you suggested - the valve stem seals. Also, the sleeve could be rusted, as the valves could have been open on that cylinder. Generally speaking, on a 4-cylinder motor 1 cylinder has both its valves closed, 1 has both open, 1 has an inlet valve open and one has an exhaust valve open at any given time. Another possibility is that the valve could be sticky - try Wynn's Valve Ease or a similar product.
