ON = Vertical. The fuel petcock may also have a "reserve" position. If it does, then when you run out of gas riding down the road all you need to do is reach down and flip the petcock lever to the reserve position. This lets the last 1/2 gallon of gas in the tank to be used. Most petcocks have a "bowl" with a 10 milimeter bolt head on the bottom. This is actually a basin that catches a bit of trash and any water that gets into the gas.
Turn the lever to the "off" position then remove the bowl and look to see if any water or trash is at the bottom. Since water is heavier than gas that is where the water will collect.While the bowl is off, momentarily turn the lever all the way past vertical to the other horizontal direction. If fuel still comes out after passing vertical then you do indeed have a fuel reserve.
