Ive got a 2006 yz450f and cant seem to get the timing just right im out of town and dont have my service book with me and every time i kick it over it back fires .............. HELP

With setting the cams it can only be right or wrong there is not really any way to be a little out unless the cam chain itself is severely over stretched...
set (I) mark on fly wheel to be visible within the marks on the inspection hole of ignition cover (always a good idea to cross reference TDC by probing the piston through spark plug hole as I have seen many flywheels shear their woodruff keys and give incorrect TDC readings) any how, once at TDC set the cams ( lobes facing outwards with the dots on each cam aligning best you can with the head. with your finger take out the slack of the cam chain through the tensioner hole and double check all dots and (I) mark on fly wheel still all line up correctly - if so then your good to button all back up... Don't be alarmed if takes a few goes it's perfectly normal to have at least couple of attempts to get all correct.
You want your valve clearances to be 0.20 on the exhaust and 0.10 on the intake side a tiny amount bigger gap is kind of OK but never smaller or you will do damage !
Backfire although can be caused by timing out or valves clearance incorrect in my experience is nearly always due to lean on fuel, could be worth double checking your pilot jet and circuit is all clear - compressed air cleaning them is best or stick new pilot jet in to be fool proof ! and air clean the hole the pilot jet screws into..
Happy to elaborate on any points if needs be, just let me know
good luck regards Jamie

How do I line up my marks on cam shaft and flywheel to set timing

Hi mate didn't get any info on what bike you are timing but this procedure is simular for most and is specific for WR YZ 250 426 and 450

set piston to TDC (top dead centre) this can be done by spinning the fly around until you can see the (i) mark stamped on the flywheel line up with the marks on the inspection plug hole (engine case) good idea to probe the cylinder through the spark plug hole to confirm the flywheel mark is correct (I have seen several 426) where the TDC mark does not give accurate TDC on piston so worth second guessing this process.

once TDC is set do not allow piston to move from this point on - starting with the exhaust cam with no slack on the cam chain the dot stamped on the cam sprocket should align with the face of head with the cam lobes pointing outward roughly 45 degrees towards the front wheel when this in place

you do the same with intake cam except the cam lobe will face opposite direction outward and the should be a dot aligning to the head

double check before you go further that when you put your finger in the chain tension hole and you tension the cam chain that when all slack is taken from the cam chain that your dots on both cams align with head face and that you still have piston at TDC if all checks out then this is timed set correct so torque all the cam caps back up install chain tensioner and the recheck all fly wheel marks are in correct position and piston is at TDC and the dot on each cam sprocket aligns to the head if it doesn't then re do the process

don't be surprised if this takes a few attempts as it takes the best of us usually at least two attempts to get all marks to align correctly thats why best to check and double check before you bolt it all down then you can adjust just by lifting one cam out and moving one tooth either direction

You have little room to play with and when you start putting chain on the cam sprockets you will find very little extra chain length to play with you may need to wiggle tug and pull both cams together to get them back in each time but go slow and gentle they do go in they just need to be encouraged

I happy to elaborate on any point if you need - good luck

Regards Jamie

How do i adjust the valves on my83 xl 185s ?

adjusting the valves simple to do pull the spark plug and the 2 inspection covers top of the head.remove the 2 inspection plugs lower left side engine cover small round one and the larger one. Use a i believe a 14 mm deep socket with a 3/8 breaker bar and rotate the crankshaft counter clockwise watch the rear rocker arm go down as it starts to come up look in the small inspection hole if you have a flashlight rotate it slowly until you see a line with the t mark before it in the small hole stop it there that is top dead center then you can set your valve settings.

1979 Honda XL 125, only 600 miles on it. The

you can get them re-cromed but its costly why not just paint them black with heat proof engine paing
they go rusty becouse of the heat in them and its a good con by honda to use realy cheap crome parts
just get some hight temp black paint the will still look good after this and its far better that red rusty pipes!

1996 DT 200 R TURBO TUNE UP

not sure if u have tried this my friend,, but on the fly wheel side of the bike,, or left of the bike as u r sat on it,,is the casing covering the fly wheel,, on that casing u will see a screw ,ie looks like a nut ,, undo that to reveal in the hole a little bit of the fly wheel,, shine a torch down it and turn the engine over by hand or put it gear and rock it ,so the fly wheel turns eventually u will see a tdc mark or line engraved on the wheel,, ,,in the hole u r lookin down will be a pointer or small arrow on the casing,, line the to up ,,and then take the spark plug out and just lightly put a screw driver down the hole of the cylinder, it should be at the top of its stroke,,turn the engine over once to make sure the piston is as top dead centre, and the mark on fly wheel line up,, if u r using a strobe light it will be 10% b4 top dead centre.. any probs ,,e mail me, 4 the other solution,, deeptattoo@hotmail.co.uk
