Question about Yamaha XJ 650 Motorcycles

1 Answer

I have a Yamaha Seca 650 Turbo that needs body work and the engine overhauled. It has been garage kept for the past three years, not started. When the shippers brought it out here they dropped it and pinched the fiberglass body fairing enroute. I have been looking to have it completely restored to its original state, but no one I have contacted so far can do it. Who can I take it to in the San Francisco Bay area that can do this type of work ?

Hi just a question these where not a particularly a great bike to begin with didn't handle that well and always lagged on the low end performance seems like you just had to keep waiting for something to happen until the turbo boost kicked in. But each to his own taste in bikes. Most mechanics will shy away from rebuilds due to the cost and time hunting down parts that are non available and often cost go well above the worth of the motorcycle. You may want to try a custom automotive body shop that does fiberglass repair and paint.

If you have "deep pockets" you will find some one. Most people doing "restorations" do 90% of the work themselves because by the time you get the bike complete you could have bought one already done for the money threw at all the problems.

I buy and sell on Ebay for Triumph and older HD bikes. I also have a couple of Honda 450s.. with diligence and patience you can do this.

I live in the Northwest. or I would help you.. If you can repair the old fairing do it.. these are getting harder and harder to come by. I run older bikes and would advocate getting a spare bike for parts.. engine parts, carbs, and electrical stuff will cost you as much or more than Harley stuff. The older Japanese Bikes are coming into their own right now..

1982 Yamaha Seca Turbo (XJ650LJ) Had the carbs

Mine was stored for 20 years, I ended up replacing the seat and needles, cleaning them thoroughly and when I tried starting it, nothing!! No gas was going to the carbs, it turned out to be my gas pump, it was seized by the old gas remains 'varnish' so I had to clean it numerous times, soaked it in gas cleaner (short period at a time 15 minutes or so, being a very powerful cleaner, you cannot leave it for long without causing greater problems, thus I was able to get the pump going by boosting it with my car batterie, having more cranking amps directly to the pump, the pump was able to release itself from the old crusty varnish.

You must mount the tank and hook up the fuel feed lines. But you do not need too bolt the tank down just to start the engine.

I have a 1982 yamaha 650 seca turbo. I just bought it and was gone for two week on vacation. pon returning, my motocycle leaked gas from the exhaust pipes. So I cleaned my carb. Boiled it in lemon...

When the carburetors over flow enough to fill the exhaust, It is possible that the gas also went into the cylinder and flowed past the rings and into the crankcase. With the engine overly full of gas and oil you could easily pop a seal or blow out a gasket. Check your oil level. If it is too full , change the oil, it will not lubricate properly with all the gas in it. Check that your shaft seal has not popped out. Check the air filter, the breather may have blown oil and gas all over it when you started the bike. Empty your pollution tubes behind the motor( they will drain the air box). Get in the habit of turning your fuel petcock off when not riding. This gas flooding happens randomly in certain models but can happen to any one.
